Format Numbers, Dates and Currency in Zoho Sheet
Format a budget with amounts, rates and dates while checking stored values and workbook locale.
Source-reviewed proposal; native UI, save/reopen and publication verification pending · Editorial standards
Quick answer
Select the typed values and use Format > Format Cells to choose Currency, Percentage, Date or Text. Check the underlying formula afterward: display rounding and currency symbols do not change the calculation or convert currencies.
Scope and evidence
Zoho Sheet web editor in a desktop browser with an English interface and edit access to a private synthetic workbook. Cached first-party documentation retrieved on 19 October 2026 and reviewed on 20 October 2026; the continuously updated service has no fixed version asserted here. Record your browser, account role and visible interface before testing. Windows/macOS desktop applications and mobile apps are outside scope.
No authenticated native editor was available for this review. Expected values below are independently calculated synthetic checks, not observed application results. No native screenshot or successful save/reopen is claimed. Use only a private practice file in an existing authorized account; stop on unavailable or policy-blocked controls.
Make a readable budget while proving that display formats do not change the quantities used in calculations. This exercise deliberately separates percentages, amounts, dates and identifiers.
Build the baseline
Create a private practice workbook named Zoho Formats Final in your existing authorized Zoho Sheet account. Rename its blank sheet Formats by double-clicking the sheet tab. Do not use a shared production workbook. Enter these cells individually; the formulas use Zoho’s documented semicolon argument style.
| Cell | Input |
|---|---|
| A1 | Item |
| B1 | Amount |
| C1 | Rate |
| D1 | Due |
| A2 | Materials |
| B2 | 1234.5 |
| C2 | 0.075 |
| D2 | =DATE(2026;10;31) |
| A3 | Refund |
| B3 | -24.5 |
| C3 | 0.2 |
| D3 | =DATE(2026;11;1) |
| A5 | Net |
| B5 | =SUM(B2:B3) |
| E1 | Tax check |
| E2 | =B2*C2 |
| F1 | ID |
Expect B5 = 1210 and E2 = 92.5875. Before typing an identifier, select F2, use Format > Format Cells, choose Text, then OK; enter 00127. Confirm its leading zeros remain.
Apply purposeful formats
- Select B2:B3, open Format > Format Cells, choose Currency, select the desired currency symbol and a two-decimal example available in the dialog, then OK. Record the symbol you chose. The negative amount must still have a visible minus sign or parentheses.
- Apply the same currency choice to B5 and E2. E2 should display a rounded amount equivalent to 92.59, although its formula still calculates 92.5875. Select E2 and inspect the formula bar:
=B2*C2must remain. - Select C2:C3 and choose Percentage in Format Cells. Choose a one-decimal example when available. Read these as 7.5% and 20.0%, not 0.075% and 0.2%. If the dialog offers a different precision, use an available percentage example and record its rounding.
- Select D2:D3 and choose a Date example with day, month and four-digit year. Confirm the dates mean 31 October and 1 November 2026. Do not type ambiguous slash dates to create this fixture.
- For a custom-format check, select B2 and inspect the custom-format area in Format Cells. Use an existing number-format example with two decimals as your starting point; preview it before applying. Custom formats are documented, but this guide does not certify arbitrary Excel format-code compatibility. Cancel if the preview cannot show 1234.50 with your locale’s separators.
Check locale without changing collaborators’ settings
Open File > Spreadsheet Settings > Locale and record the displayed date format, currency symbol and separators, then cancel. These settings affect the workbook and its collaborators. They are not a personal display preference. Only change them in an isolated copy if a different locale is actually required. A currency symbol changes presentation; it does not perform an exchange-rate conversion.
Change and grow
Change B2 to 1300: B5 becomes 1275.5 and E2 becomes 97.5. Enter A4 Shipping, B4 10, C4 0.1, D4 =DATE(2026;11;2). Apply the chosen amount, percentage and date formats to row 4 explicitly. Replace B5 with =SUM(B2:B4) and confirm 1285.5. Do not assume a neighboring cell inherits formatting.
Final checkpoint and recovery
Confirm F2 still reads 00127, B5 is 1285.5, E2 is 97.5 before display rounding, and D4 is 2 November. Commit the edit with Enter, wait for the cloud save status to settle, record the workbook URL and its listing location under Zoho Formats Final, close and reopen it, then repeat these checks. This is a learner acceptance check, not a reported test run.
For an optional reset, first preserve the final workbook and create a separate practice copy. In that copy only, restore B2 to 1234.5, clear A4:D4 and reset B5 to =SUM(B2:B3). Expect 1210 again. Do not rely on Undo after reopening. If values show as text, inspect the formula bar and the cell type; formatting a text string as Number is not proof it became numeric. If a date looks wrong, inspect the DATE formula before changing locale or retyping it.
