Quick answer

Use Edit โ†’ Recalculate or F9 for formulas, then distinguish a stale calculation from a wrong dependency, circular reference or external-data refresh problem.

Before you start

Zoho Sheet web editor in an English desktop browser; rolling service, official documentation reviewed 20 October 2026. Not desktop-app or mobile instructions. Use an editable practice file containing only synthetic data. Keep the original unchanged and record the file name and storage location so that you reopen the same copy. These are documentation-based instructions and independently checked examples, not a claim of native application testing.

Establish a known dependency chain

Enter Units, Price, and Amount in A1:C1. Set A2 to 4, B2 to 12.5, and C2 to =A2*B2. In D1 enter Allowance, D2 enter 5, E1 enter Net, and E2 enter =C2-D2. Expect Amount 50 and Net 45. Record the formulas as well as their displayed results.

The two-step chain makes a stale-result investigation precise. E2 depends on C2, which depends on A2 and B2. D2 is an independent input. Recalculation cannot repair a formula that points to the wrong address, and a value typed over a formula is no longer a calculation.

Recalculate and trace the cause

  1. Change A2 from 4 to 6 and commit the edit. The expected Amount is 75 and Net is 70.
  2. Choose Edit โ†’ Recalculate, or press F9, as documented for Zoho Sheet’s web editor.
  3. If the values do not match, inspect C2 and E2. C2 must contain =A2*B2; E2 must contain =C2-D2. Check for a hard-coded number, a text entry that merely looks like a formula, or a reference to a different row.
  4. Inspect the inputs next. Confirm B2 is numeric 12.5 and D2 is numeric 5 under the workbook’s locale. A formatted display is not proof that an imported value is numeric.
  5. Reopen the same saved workbook and check the chain again. The recalculation help says opening or refreshing a sheet updates formulas; that is distinct from fetching new records into an external data connection.

Do not repeatedly reload a file while another person is editing it in an attempt to fix an unexplained number. First record the formula, inputs, error text and expected arithmetic so that the problem is reproducible.

Recognize a circular model

In a separate disposable cell, a formula that directly or indirectly depends on itself has no ordinary evaluation order. For example, if C2 refers to E2 and E2 already refers to C2, each calculation needs the other result first. Repair the dependency by restoring C2 to =A2*B2; do not turn on iteration simply to hide the error.

Zoho’s calculation settings are reached through File โ†’ Spreadsheet Settings. Under Calculation โ†’ Iterative Preferences, the documentation describes enabling iteration, a maximum iteration count and a threshold between successive results. These are model-design choices. Iteration is appropriate only for an intentional iterative model with a justified convergence test, not this multiplication-and-subtraction fixture.

Separate calculation from freshness

A linked workbook, URL import or application connection may contain older source values even when every local formula is correctly recalculated. Check the source’s latest value and the connection’s refresh state separately. If A2 remains 4 because a source has not refreshed, recalculating 4*12.5 correctly still returns 50.

After resolving the cause, retain a small validation note: original inputs, changed input, expected results and actual observed results. Restore A2 to 4 if you want the original fixture, then confirm 50 and 45. Exported files require the same checks in the receiving application; this workflow does not establish cross-application calculation parity.
