LEGACYFINV Function (Calligra Sheets)

Statistical Intermediate Calligra Sheets

Use Calligra LEGACYFINV for right-tail F cutoffs with explicit input validation. Compare ordinary results and documented numerical-search limitations.

Verification status: 18 selected formulas were executed through the Calligra Sheets 25.04.2 calculation engine library. Exact outputs, mathematical references and source limitations are documented separately. Version 26.08.2 was source-checked only; no GUI-cell or import claim. How formula examples are checked

Validate every input. The tested LEGACYFINV engine returned numbers for probabilities outside [0,1] and zero degrees of freedom. Its source contains no active domain guard before the inverse search.

Quick answer: =LEGACYFINV(.25;2;2) gives approximately 3 in the tested Calligra calculation engine.

Availability and version history

  • Introduced: First release not established; the name is present in Calligra 2.4.0 source.
  • Supported in: Calligra Sheets 26.08.2, with no retirement established.
  • Scope: Desktop Sheets with the Statistical module. Compatibility names remain registered; no retirement is inferred. Examples use English semicolon-separated formulas.
  • Checked: October 14, 2026. Selected formulas ran through the official 25.04.2 engine library. Source and independent mathematics were checked. This is engine evidence, with no GUI-cell or import verification; 26.08.2 was source-checked only.

What LEGACYFINV returns

LEGACYFINV finds a cutoff for an upper-tail F probability. Unlike Calligra FINV’s inspected lower-tail path, this compatibility function inverts LEGACYFDIST. Both degree parameters describe positive F-distribution shapes; the name remains currently registered. Function-specific official reference.

Syntax and arguments

=LEGACYFINV(probability;numeratorDF;denominatorDF)

Exactly three arguments are required. Use 0<probability<1 and 1≤numeratorDF,denominatorDF<10^10 to match the forward helper’s guarded domain. Fractional degrees in that range are retained. Probability=1 has the zero cutoff. Registration and implementation.

Reproducible engine examples

The engine and mathematical columns are separate. Results are rounded to twelve decimal places, or thirteen significant digits in scientific notation for very small or large values. This is a display choice, not an accuracy guarantee.

Practical worksheet

With two numerator and two denominator degrees, the upper tail is 1/(1+x). Therefore the mathematical inverse is (1-p)/p: p=0.25 gives 3, p=0.5 gives 1 and p=0.05 gives 19. These native cases agree closely with that simple model.

For numeratorDF=5, denominatorDF=10 and upper probability 0.1, the engine returns approximately 2.521640678482. The independently calculated value is shown in the table rather than inferred from a roundtrip.

Advanced interpretation and checks

The executed check evaluates LEGACYFDIST at the returned cutoff with the same degree order. It recovers the requested probability near 0.1. Exchanging degrees without transforming the statistic changes the distribution.

For a pre-specified positive F statistic with degrees v,w, upper-tail and lower-tail probabilities sum to 1. The inverse here takes the upper probability; use that convention explicitly rather than assuming every FINV-named function uses it.

The executed advanced check was:

=LEGACYFDIST(LEGACYFINV(.1;5;10);5;10)

Its engine result was 0.1.

Boundaries and troubleshooting

At p=0, the native search returned roughly 6.748370691815×10^161 instead of an infinite cutoff. At p=−0.1 it returned 108086391056891904; p=1.1 and either zero degree returned 0. These are invalid-input/search observations, not usable probabilities or quantiles.

Nonnumeric probability text followed the p=0 path. Required-argument count checks still work, but they do not validate the numeric domain. Screen types, probabilities and degrees before calculation. Current-source agreement does not establish execution in a later version.

Official evidence and precision scope

The statistical and math modules and value-calculation helpers are byte-identical between the inspected 25.04.2 and 26.08.2 sources. That comparison supports the source discussion but does not establish later-version execution, GUI-cell behavior or other locales.
