Reconcile Selected Values with Calligra's Status Summary

Check a selected range with Sum and Average, distinguish text from numbers, and avoid an unresolved Count/CountA mapping discrepancy.

Documentation and pinned source reviewed; native verification pending; Count/CountA branch held · Editorial standards

Use the status summary for a temporary reconciliation without placing another total inside your records. Unlike a worksheet formula, the displayed result follows the selection and is not a permanent report total.

Scope

This guide follows English controls and calculation code at KDE Calligra commit 72123cc643f6625351139e7df294544255a1056f. The official handbook under stable_kf6 is historical revision 2.7, March 11, 2013, not evidence of current application execution. No native run or screenshot was made for this guide. Use a disposable blank sheet; stop if your build lacks these controls. Examples below are source-derived expectations with independent arithmetic checks, not observed application results.

Prepare a selection with a deliberate text entry

Enter the following values individually. Leave A6 genuinely empty rather than entering a space or a formula that displays nothing.

Cell Entry
A1 Amount
A2 12
A3 18
A4 pending
A5 30
A6 Leave empty

The three numeric amounts total 60 and their mean is 20. The text pending is not another amount and does not stand for zero. Keep an unresolved amount separately flagged rather than treating a correct numeric total as proof the records are complete.

Check Sum, then Average

  1. Select A2:A6, including the text and empty cell but not the heading.
  2. Right-click the summary-result area of the status bar and choose Sum. The expected numeric result is 60. The display may include a range-size prefix; that size is not a count of numeric records.
  3. Right-click the same result area and choose Average. The expected result is 20, not 12: this numeric-only calculation uses three amounts, not all five selected positions.
  4. Narrow the selection to A2:A3. The expected Sum is 30 and Average is 15. This is a useful check that the selection, rather than the whole sheet, drives the result.
  5. Replace A4’s text with the numeric value 24, then reselect A2:A6. The expected Sum becomes 84 and Average becomes 21. Restore pending afterward if you want the original exercise again.

For a durable cross-check, enter =SUM(A2:A6) in C2, outside the selected range. It should be 60 before the replacement and 84 afterward. Do not expand the summary selection to include C2, or you will include the separately calculated total as well as its inputs. See SUM and the first expense tracker for worksheet formulas and a saved report.

Why Count and CountA are not acceptance checks here

The old handbook describes Count as numeric cells and CountA as nonempty cells. However, the pinned implementation wires the Count menu choice to the full count and a CountA display prefix; CountA is wired to the numeric count and a Count prefix. That source discrepancy has not been tested in a running application or resolved. Do not rely on the menu name alone, and do not treat this guide as validation of either counting command. The original fixture contains three numeric entries and four nonempty entries in A2:A6, but no menu-labelled count result is promised.

Troubleshooting and limits

  • No result: check that the status bar is visible and a calculation other than None is selected. The historical handbook also describes the function setting in the configuration dialog’s Interface page; current dialog navigation is not verified here.
  • Wrong amount: reselect the exact range, finish editing the cell, and check for numbers stored as text or accidentally included total cells.
  • Unexpected average: an unresolved text label is excluded, not counted as zero. Resolve missing amounts before interpreting the mean as a complete business result.
  • Filtered, hidden or discontiguous data: these branches are outside this exercise. Do not infer visible-cells-only behavior from this contiguous, unfiltered sample.
  • Errors or unusual values: this fixture deliberately excludes errors, Boolean values, dates and numeric-looking strings. Their behavior is not covered.
