Errors · eight-software comparison

IFERROR versus IFNA

Compare catch-all error fallbacks with lookup-only #N/A fallbacks without hiding genuine calculation problems.

Task

Display "Check divisor" when a calculation divides by zero. Distinguish this from a missing lookup key.

Expected output

Check divisor

Compatibility trap: IFERROR catches a broad set of errors, whereas IFNA only catches the not-available error where the function is documented.

One shared five-row test dataset

The same source rows make results easier to compare. Use the CSV in any supported spreadsheet application; the ODS workbook also includes LibreOffice formula tests.

Formula syntax and feature differences

“Documented” rows cite official product help, but were not run in the destination software. A formula shown here is a migration candidate, not a guarantee of identical behaviour or file interoperability.

LibreOffice Calc

Documented

Version: Available since LibreOffice 4.0.

Arguments: IFERROR(value; alternate_value)

=IFERROR(1/0;"Check divisor")

IFERROR catches division errors; use IFNA for missing lookup keys so unrelated errors remain visible.

Official documentation ↗

Apache OpenOffice Calc

Alternative

Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1 candidate.

Arguments: IF(ISERROR(value); alternate; value)

=IF(ISERROR(1/0);"Check divisor";1/0)

Explicit IF and ISERROR workaround; formula syntax/behaviour require local confirmation.

Official documentation ↗

Gnumeric

Documented

Version: Current Gnumeric manual.

Arguments: IFERROR(x,y)

=IFERROR(1/0,"Check divisor")

Gnumeric documents IFERROR(x,y) and IFNA(x,y) separately.

Official documentation ↗

Calligra Sheets

Not researched

This specific error-handling combination has not been reconciled against a current Calligra reference.

PlanMaker

Not researched

PlanMaker IF references error handling but this exact syntax is not verified for the target release.

ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor

Documented

Version: Current ONLYOFFICE help.

Arguments: IFERROR(value, value_if_error)

=IFERROR(1/0,"Check divisor")

This catches #DIV/0!; its IFNA function addresses only #N/A.

Official documentation ↗

Apple Numbers

Documented

Version: Current Apple Functions guide.

Arguments: IFERROR(value, if-error)

=IFERROR(1/0,"Check divisor")

IFERROR is documented, but no portable IFNA is assumed from Apple’s function list.

Official documentation ↗

Zoho Sheet

Documented

Version: Current Zoho Sheet help.

Arguments: IFERROR(value; value_if_error)

=IFERROR(1/0;"Check divisor")

Zoho documents IFERROR and the narrower IFNA separately; error-name spelling can differ.

What changes when you migrate?

For the constant expression 1/0, the alternate text is the independently reasoned outcome if IFERROR behaves as documented; the exact sample is not marked native-tested.

A missing product key (#N/A) is a different business event from an invalid numeric calculation (#DIV/0!). Select the fallback scope deliberately.

An IFERROR wrapper can conceal broken references or invalid types. In an auditing workflow, keep a separate error log rather than suppressing every failure.

A missing lookup is not the same as a broken calculation

When a formula tries to compute 1 ÷ 0, the expected calculation is a division error. Wrapping it in IFERROR substitutes the displayed text Check divisor. This conclusion follows from the documented IFERROR semantics and independent reasoning; none of the destination application’s formula examples in this new guide were natively executed.

By contrast, a product lookup for SKU-999 may fail because the item isn’t in the table. A function such as IFNA, where documented, can catch #N/A while leaving division, reference and other formula errors visible. That matters when distinguishing “item not found” from “report is broken.”

Why catch-all handling can damage an audit

A common formula design is to wrap an entire sheet of calculations in IFERROR and return empty text. This makes incomplete data appear clean, and can hide missing ranges, wrong types or broken formula references. If a customer price cannot be computed, a visible error and a separate exception list may be safer than a blank cell.

Situation Example error type Recommended decision
No match for a valid product identifier #N/A Show “Not found” if an appropriate not-available-only handler exists
Units is 0 and unit price divides by units #DIV/0! Investigate invalid denominator; show “Check divisor” only if desired
An expected reference was deleted #REF! Repair the workbook rather than suppress the error

Migration checklist

  1. Test a valid calculation as well as the failing case; IFERROR should leave valid values unchanged.
  2. Check a deliberately missing lookup independently of a zero-denominator test.
  3. Do not infer that a specific error name or code is spelled identically across all eight programs.
  4. Check whether the target application even documents IFNA rather than presuming equivalence.
  5. Record an exception count outside the IFERROR formula if suppressing an error would hide material problems.

If the failure is caused by a missing key rather than an arithmetic error, start with exact-match lookup migration.

Documentation and testing disclosure

Official vendor sources and version scopes appear beside each software candidate above. Expected outputs are independently reasoned from the shared sample; the five new comparisons do not claim native execution in any of the eight applications. Read more about how we distinguish documentation from execution in our editorial standards.

Evidence standard: Only LibreOffice rows labelled “Native tested” were run as executable fixtures. Other entries reflect vendor help or a separately labelled workaround. Dates and versions are shown when known. Last editorial research: 2026-10-11.
