LibreOffice Calc: Repair #REF! and Error 524
What the error means
#REF!, code 524, means a reference cannot be resolved, including a missing referenced row, column or sheet. The error identifies a broken dependency, not the correct replacement address. Official error mapping.
A reversible demonstration
In a new disposable workbook, enter numeric 18 in A1 and =A1*2 in B1. Confirm the intended arithmetic: 36. Delete the entire column A, not merely its contents. The formula that moves into the new A1 has lost its original input column; inspect it for the broken-reference error.
Immediately undo the deletion. The intended restored arrangement is 18 in A1 and the doubling formula in B1, with result 36. Then change the input to 20; the expected result is 40. This is a documentation-based reproduction recipe, not a claim that the steps were run here.
Choose the repair from the cause
- An accidental structural deletion just happened: undo it in your working copy, then confirm the input cells and formulas returned to their intended positions. Stop if later edits would also be undone.
- The workbook was saved after deletion: compare a known-good copy with the damaged one. Identify what the missing range represented before editing the formula. A nearby address that removes the error can still point to the wrong data.
- A formula was copied into another area: compare its intended dependencies with the original formula. Absolute references control movement during copying; they do not preserve a cell that has actually been deleted.
- The formula relies on names or other sheets: inspect the definition and sheet identity. Renaming, missing sheets and damaged names need contextual diagnosis, not indiscriminate replacement of error tokens.
Do not type a guessed cell address over every occurrence of #REF!. First document the intended relationship, such as “quantity in this row multiplied by the rate on the settings sheet.” Then repair one formula and check a contrasting input before applying the same change elsewhere.
Validate more than the display
After a repair, confirm both the result and its dependency. A hard-coded 36 would pass the first example but fail the change-to-20 check. Review totals downstream, save the repaired copy separately, and reopen it before replacing any working version.
Do not wrap this error in a zero-valued fallback. It means the model has lost an input location, not that the missing amount is zero. See named-range diagnosis and dependency tracing.
Scope and verification
The error mapping is documented in LibreOffice 26.8 desktop Help, checked October 21, 2026. This is a documentation-based desktop guide, not a test of an installed release or a claim about every platform. The worked arithmetic was checked independently; the application steps and displayed errors have not been newly executed. Use a disposable workbook or a separately saved copy.
