LibreOffice Calc: Diagnose #DIV/0! and Error 532

What the error means

#DIV/0! corresponds to code 532: a division has a zero denominator. It can also arise inside a statistical calculation, even when your formula contains no / operator. Official error mapping.

Reproduce a small case safely

In a blank sheet, enter numeric 120 in A1 and numeric 0 in B1. Enter =A1/B1 in C1. This deliberately requests undefined arithmetic, so the documented diagnosis is division by zero.

Replace B1 with numeric 6. C1 should now be 20, because 120 Ă· 6 = 20. Change B1 to 8 as a dependency check: the expected result is 15. Restore the intended input afterward. Do not use this experiment in an operational workbook.

Find the denominator before changing the formula

  1. Read the failing formula. For =A1/(B1-C1), the denominator is the entire expression B1-C1, not just C1. Two equal nonzero inputs still produce a zero difference.
  2. Trace the cells feeding that expression. A legitimate zero, a missing input and an upstream formula returning zero require different repairs. Confirm the meaning with the source data, not just the cell’s appearance.
  3. For statistical formulas, check the function’s data requirements. The official reference includes sample variance/standard-deviation calculations with insufficient observations and standardization with zero standard deviation. Adding a dummy observation is not a valid repair.
  4. Correct the input or model, then test a second valid input. Review dependent totals and charts as well as the first visible error.

When an error should remain visible

A price-per-unit result cannot be computed from zero units. Replacing it with zero would falsely assert that the price is known. If the workbook needs a friendly presentation, first distinguish “no activity” from “data missing” and show a clear status outside the numeric calculation. Keep the underlying problem discoverable.

A blanket error-catching wrapper can also hide broken references and misspelled names. Do not add one simply because a report must look clean. Likewise, changing the denominator to an arbitrary tiny number changes the question rather than fixing it.

Follow dependency tracing for an upstream cause, or return to the diagnostic hub.

Scope and verification

The error mapping is documented in LibreOffice 26.8 desktop Help, checked October 21, 2026. This is a documentation-based desktop guide, not a test of an installed release or a claim about every platform. The worked arithmetic was checked independently; the application steps and displayed errors have not been newly executed. Use a disposable workbook or a separately saved copy.
