EFFECT Function in ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor: Syntax, Examples and Troubleshooting

Financial Intermediate ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor

Compare nominal annual rates after compounding at different frequencies.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

Translate a nominal quoted annual rate into its annual compound equivalent. The official ONLYOFFICE EFFECT function reference confirms the English formula name, argument order and documented meanings. The examples are independently calculated mathematical expectations, not results observed in an installed ONLYOFFICE application.

Availability and version history

  • Introduced: The original introduction version and date are not established by the official sources checked.
  • Availability: Documented in the current ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor help; no final working-version endpoint is established.
  • Scope: Docs and Desktop Editors release separately. This unversioned help does not establish availability in every older build, mobile client or deployment.
  • Checked: October 14, 2026, against the official function reference. Documentation check; not a new native test.

Exact documented syntax and argument order

=EFFECT(nominal_rate, npery)
Position Argument Required status, data type and interpretation Omitted default
1 nominal_rate Required nominal annual interest rate as a number (e.g. 6% or 0.06) —
2 npery Required number of compounding periods in one year —

Defaults: None: both arguments are required. The help page does not explicitly enumerate every invalid-input behaviour or native error code.

Rate units: Supply a nominal annual rate and the number of compoundings in that year. EFFECT has no payment or cash-flow-sign argument.

Reproduce the worksheet from a blank workbook

  1. Open a new blank spreadsheet in ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor. Select the English formula language, or adapt the formula names/separators to the actual configured locale. Choose a blank sheet.
  2. Enter these literal inputs in the stated cells in column B. For entries beginning with =, enter the formula. For negative payments, include the minus sign.
  3. Put each worked formula below in a fresh cell such as D2, D3, …; do not overwrite the baseline B-column inputs. Increase displayed decimal places for precision comparisons.
  4. Press Enter after each formula or use Formula → Function (the official function-insertion guide describes the Insert Function dialog and Shift+F3). Compare with expected outputs, recording the exact Desktop or Docs/web build and locale when native testing becomes available.
Cell Enter exactly Purpose
B2 6% Nominal annual interest rate = 0.06
B3 12 Compounding periods per year (monthly)

Example scope: Only the formula labeled as using B-cells depends on the preceding baseline. The other examples use explicit literal values and may be entered in any otherwise blank output cell. Formula examples use the vendor’s English, comma-separated syntax; other locale settings may require adaptation, which was not natively tested.

Complete worked formulas and expected outputs

Independent expected results (rounded to six decimal places (half-up)) are provided for every row. These are not screenshots, measured native ONLYOFFICE outputs, or claims of product compatibility in historical builds.

# Formula to type (copy with leading =) Independently calculated expected value What the example demonstrates
1 =EFFECT(B2,B3) 0.061678 6% nominal annual rate compounded monthly
2 =EFFECT(6%,1) 0.060000 single annual compounding period
3 =EFFECT(6%,2) 0.060900 semiannual compounding
4 =EFFECT(6%,4) 0.061364 quarterly compounding
5 =EFFECT(6%,12) 0.061678 monthly compounding
6 =EFFECT(6%,365) 0.061831 daily compounding as a mathematical case
7 =EFFECT(12%,12) 0.126825 12% APR compounded monthly
8 =EFFECT(5%,4) 0.050945 5% APR compounded quarterly
9 =EFFECT(0.08,12) 0.083000 decimal input equivalent of 8% APR
10 =EFFECT(20%,2) 0.210000 20% APR compounded twice annually
11 =EFFECT(0.5%,12) 0.005011 half-percent nominal annual rate
12 =EFFECT(10%,1) 0.100000 once-yearly rate returns nominal rate

Result interpretation: A value like 0.061678 is a decimal financial rate (approximately 6.1678% when displayed as a percentage); it is not a cash amount. Unless an explicit native run is documented, an error message is not assigned to any out-of-domain example.

Advanced workflows, mathematical checks and real use cases

Why 6% nominal is not the same as 6% effective

A nominal 6% rate with 12 compounding periods means that each monthly period earns 0.06/12=0.005. Compounding over the year gives (1+0.06/12)^12−1 as the effective annual rate. The result should be entered as a percentage for presentation (e.g. format the cell as 0.00%) rather than multiplying the stored decimal by 100 and calling that the rate.

Compare compounding frequencies

Hold nominal_rate constant and compare =EFFECT(6%,1), =EFFECT(6%,4) and =EFFECT(6%,12). More frequent compounding increases the mathematical effective rate for a positive nominal rate, but a real financial product may also include fees and different quoted annual-rate conventions.

Reverse conversion check

The vendor documents NOMINAL as the corresponding conversion back to a nominal annual rate. The mathematical cross-check is =NOMINAL(EFFECT(6%,12),12), expected to return 6% apart from floating-point display differences. EFFECT is not a loan payment calculation; use FV, PV, PMT or a cash-flow model to evaluate balances.

Financial identity and use limits

For nominal rate j and positive integer compounding count m, expected effective rate is (1+j/m)^m−1. The financial model assumes a consistent periodic compounding convention. The vendor page confirms argument identities but does not expressly document exact error codes, numerical coercion or the handling of fractional npery; those require native testing.

Troubleshooting, input constraints and limitations

Symptom or question Explanation or action Evidence boundary
6 displayed instead of 6% Enter 6% or 0.06, not the number 6 to represent six percent. Financial-model guidance; native coercion/error display untested.
Effective rate seems higher With positive nominal rate and multiple compoundings, that is a normal compounding effect. Financial-model guidance; native coercion/error display untested.
Result appears as 0.0617 Format as a percentage; a raw decimal of about 0.0617 means approximately 6.17%. Financial-model guidance; native coercion/error display untested.
Fractional or zero compounding count Use a positive whole number matching the actual contract; vendor-specific error and truncation details are untested. Financial-model guidance; native coercion/error display untested.
Formula name unrecognized Verify the formula language in File → Advanced Settings, search the Function dialog, and record the exact app version and locale. Current English catalogue supports the name; older editions and localized names were not verified.
Unexpected numerical precision Show more decimal places and compare unrounded outputs against independently computed cash-flow equations. Do not round intermediate values for reconciliation. Mathematical precision expectation only; numeric-engine rounding not natively verified.
Spreadsheet shows an error Check types, supported timing values, formula separators, and period ranges; record actual build, inputs and exact error text before diagnosing. Official function page does not establish every error code, so none is invented.

Limits of the model: The vendor establishes two arguments. The mathematical model is for nominal annual rates with periodic compounding; it does not include fees or continuous compounding. The official source is about a calculation function rather than product-specific financial advice. Changing interest rates, fees, taxes, extra or skipped payments, compounding conventions, day-count conventions, and transaction timing may produce different real-world results.

NOMINAL converts back from an effective rate; RATE solves a periodic rate from a payment schedule. Do not confuse a quoted APR with an effective annual yield. See the vendor’s references rather than assuming identical behaviour in other spreadsheet products:

Locale and workbook compatibility

The examples use English function names, decimal points and comma argument separators, matching the function-entry guide. Adapt notation to the installed formula-language and region settings. When moving a workbook between products, recalculate the small sample in the destination version before trusting the full model. Display precision is separate from the stored value; retain unrounded intermediate values when reconciling totals.
