Quick answer
Use Ctrl+Home to return to A1, Ctrl+End to inspect the lower-right used cell, and Shift with the arrow keys to extend a selection deliberately. A worksheet’s used area is not necessarily your data table. Before changing hundreds of cells, check the selected rectangle against the task you actually intend to perform.
Prepare a sparse practice sheet
These keyboard instructions follow the English Windows/Linux desktop interface documented for ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors 10.0.0. macOS shortcuts differ; use the Mac column in the official shortcut reference rather than substituting Command mechanically. Work in a new XLSX workbook, not an important production sheet.
Make a small audit table in A1:D12. Use the headers Record, Owner, Hours and Status in row 1; enter records R01 through R11 below them. Fill the remaining columns with any synthetic names, hours and statuses. Put the separate note “Review next month” in H40. Leave the intervening cells blank. The note deliberately makes the used rectangle larger than the table.
Move first, select second
- Click a cell near the middle of the table, then press Ctrl+Home. Confirm that A1 becomes active.
- Press Ctrl+End. On this newly prepared sheet, H40 is the expected lower-right used cell. This is a navigation check, not an instruction to delete everything between the table and that note.
- Return with Ctrl+Home. Hold Shift and press Right three times, then Down eleven times. The intended selection is A1:D12: four columns and twelve rows, including the header.
- Click outside the selection to cancel it. Recreate the same rectangle with the mouse by dragging from A1 to D12. Compare the highlighted boundaries before applying any command.
- Return to A1 again and press Ctrl+Shift+End. This intentionally selects through the used-area boundary. Compare A1:H40 with A1:D12, then cancel without editing.
The first rectangle contains 48 cells; the second contains 320. Selecting the larger rectangle for a fill, clear or formatting action would touch unrelated space and the note. This small fixture makes that risk visible before you work with thousands of rows.
Choose the appropriate navigation tool
Use the vertical and horizontal scrollbars to inspect distant portions of the sheet without typing into cells. Sheet navigation buttons and the sheet list help when the tab strip cannot show every worksheet. Changing the visible area is not the same as changing the active cell or selection; check both before entering data.
Ctrl+Space selects a whole column and Shift+Space selects a whole row. Use them only when the intended action really applies to the complete column or row. The documented Ctrl+A action selects the entire worksheet; do not assume it means “just this table.”
Check a changed boundary and recover safely
Add a second note in J50 and repeat Ctrl+End. In this fresh fixture the expected endpoint is now J50, even though the audit table still ends at D12. If a real workbook jumps farther than expected, inspect that location for stored content or previous use instead of deleting a large area blindly. Blank gaps also make directional jumps a poor substitute for an explicitly checked selection.
If a selection is wrong, click once to cancel and start again. If you already changed cells, use Undo before making further edits and compare the table and notes. Save the practice workbook, reopen it, and repeat the boundary check on your installation. For an unrelated but useful next step, see safe duplicate-row removal, where selecting complete records is equally important.
Sources and verification
Official documentation snapshots retrieved on 20 October 2026 support the procedures above. The worked checks are independently reasoned expectations, not a report of native application testing. Save/reopen, rendering and platform behavior remain checks for the stated installation.
