PlanMaker Troubleshooting: Check the Edition Before the Fix
First decision: Identify the product as FreeOffice PlanMaker or another SoftMaker edition before looking for a command. A missing paid-edition control is not evidence that your free installation is broken.
Checked October 23, 2026. This reference uses the vendor’s FreeOffice 2024 feature description, the FreeOffice manual for simple backups, and explicitly labelled PlanMaker 2026 documentation. No application was run, no paid trial was used, and no screenshots or native repair results are claimed. See versions and availability for the free desktop baseline.
Preserve evidence before changing anything
Keep an untouched source file, a working copy and the exact warning text. Record the edition, revision, operating system, interface language and file type. Note whether the symptom appeared on opening, editing, recalculation or saving. If only one workbook fails, begin with its smallest affected range, not an application reinstall.
The FreeOffice feature list documents calculations, text import/export, XLS/XLSX exchange and syntax highlighting. It does not certify every instruction in the paid 2026 manual for FreeOffice. The routes below deliberately distinguish a diagnostic idea from a version-specific procedure.
Choose the correct diagnostic branch
Wrong total, but no error: Compare the input cells and the formula’s actual range. In a synthetic stock check, 6 cartons at 14 units each means 84 units; changing the carton count to 7 means 98. A displayed 84 after that input change requires investigation, not replacement with the constant 98. These expected results were calculated independently, not in PlanMaker. The formula-tracing guide is for paid PlanMaker 2026; its tracing and watch-window commands are not promised here for FreeOffice. In the free edition, inspect the formula and referenced cells directly if those tools are unavailable.
CSV identifiers or dates changed: Preserve the raw text and determine the intended column types before another import. The CSV identifier tutorial documents PlanMaker 2026 import-preview controls. Its primary source distinguishes field separators, numeric separators and per-column types. Check the free edition’s own available import controls rather than assuming identical dialogs. If you cannot establish a text-preserving route, retain the original and mark the import unverified; zero-padding a converted number is not recovery.
A formula copied from a tutorial is rejected: Record the exact formula and language settings. The function-language reference covers documented 2026 controls and explains why function names and separators need checking. Do not change application-wide regional settings as the first fix for one expression.
An Excel conversion warns about formulas: Keep both formats. The 2026 Excel-file documentation describes incompatible calculations and syntax highlighting. The existing conversion audit is also 2026-scoped. Neither source establishes full FreeOffice compatibility with every Excel workbook. Record affected cells and verify results in the actual receiving application.
An older copy contains missing work: Preserve the current workbook and any candidate backup before comparison; do not save over either. FreeOffice 2024 supports simple backups, not the paid Backup-tab/version-manager workflow. Its manual, pages 409 and 470–471, places No backup / Simple backup on the Files tab of File → Options. Simple backup retains one previous document version with the .bak extension in the document’s folder. This is not a multi-version archive, and enabling the setting now does not prove an older backup exists. Follow the free simple-backup branch of the recovery tutorial to preserve, identify and check an actual candidate. If none can be found, use a known independent backup if available and leave recovery unresolved otherwise. The tutorial’s separate paid 2026 rehearsal and vendor version-manager guide remain paid-only; a missing Backup tab in FreeOffice is expected, not an installation fault.
Close the issue with a check, not an appearance
Repeat the failing action on a copy and verify the changed cell, dependent result and an unaffected record. Record the exact file and revision that passed. If a required feature, backup or receiving application is unavailable, leave the result pending. Do not buy an upgrade, enable unknown automation or hide an error solely to make the workbook look repaired.
