Use Goal Seek in PlanMaker to Reach a Target
Set up a simple target-profit calculation in PlanMaker 2026 Goal Seek and understand the formula, target and variable cell fields.

Goal Seek works backwards: you know the result you want and ask the spreadsheet to find the input that produces it. PlanMaker’s 2026 manual documents a goal-seek dialog with Formula cell, Target value, Variable cell, and Accuracy fields.
Example: how many units produce 420 in revenue?
In a blank worksheet, enter:
| Cell | Enter | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
B1 |
12 |
Revenue per unit |
B2 |
25 |
Starting guess: units |
B3 |
=B1*B2 |
Calculated revenue |
With B2=25, the formula produces 300. The target is 420, so the exact mathematical answer is 420 / 12 = 35 units.
Use PlanMaker Goal Seek
- Select the formula cell
B3. - Choose Data → Analyze → Goal seek.
- Set Formula cell to
B3and Target value to420. - Set Variable cell to
B2. The solver changes B2, not the fixed 12 in B1. - Start the approximation and inspect the answer. Expect approximately 35 in B2 and 420 in B3.
- Only accept/apply the result after verifying the proposed number makes sense.
What Goal Seek can and cannot do
It varies one cell to match a formula result. It is not the right tool to optimize several independent decisions with capacity constraints; that requires a solver or optimization model. Results are approximations and can fail to converge for some equations.
When modelling whole products, round units to a permitted integer and then recompute the final amount—don’t rely on a fractional unit merely because the approximation converged.
Troubleshooting
- Variable cell has a formula: use an editable numerical input cell instead.
- Formula does not depend on the variable: changing B2 must genuinely affect B3.
- Unexpected answer: check the target units, decimal separators and cell references.
- No solution: the model may be discontinuous, constrained, or impossible to reach with that single input.

Verification: 12 × 35 = 420 was checked arithmetically. Goal Seek workflow is documentation-checked and awaits native PlanMaker execution.
