CHOOSEROWS in WPS Spreadsheet: Extract Named Row Positions from a Data Block

Lookup and Reference Intermediate WPS Spreadsheet

Select records by relative row position in WPS, avoid header offsets, and verify a small exact result.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =CHOOSEROWS(A2:C6,1,4) selects the first and fourth rows within A2:C6. Because that range starts at worksheet row 2, those are worksheet rows 2 and 5.

Syntax and arguments

=CHOOSEROWS(array,row_number1,row_number2,...)

array is the source rectangle. The following arguments identify rows within it. The verified video uses positive, in-range positions in increasing order; the examples stay within that pattern. Selecting rows retains all columns of the chosen rectangle.

Example 1: pull two inspection records

Enter the following in A1:C6, including the header:

Row A B C
1 Item Batch Units
2 Pen P10 12
3 Pad P11 8
4 Clip P12 30
5 Tape P13 6
6 Card P14 15

Put =CHOOSEROWS(A2:C6,1,4) in a separate blank area beginning E2. Expected E2:G3 is:

E F G
Pen P10 12
Tape P13 6

There are five source records and three source columns. Two selected row positions therefore produce two rows and three columns. Count from A2: Pen is position 1, Pad 2, Clip 3, Tape 4, Card 5. This independently derives the result; it is not a native test report.

Advanced case: include a header deliberately

For a report containing the header and those same two records, use =CHOOSEROWS(A1:C6,1,2,5) in E6. The expected three rows are Item, Batch, Units / Pen, P10, 12 / Tape, P13, 6.

The source now begins one row earlier. Position 1 selects the header, position 2 selects Pen, and position 5 selects Tape. Simply expanding the source upward while keeping 1,4 would select the header and Clip instead. This is why an explicit input table is essential when checking row-selection examples.

Source correction: follow the formula bar

The official video’s subtitle at 26.1 seconds says A1:E11. The actual completed formula at 41.625 seconds is =CHOOSEROWS(A2:E11,1,4,8,9). Its first result is record 1, not the header. The four result records have serial numbers 1, 4, 8 and 9, corroborating the formula-bar range. Copying the subtitle would create a one-row offset. The worksheet’s manually placed output header is not part of that formula result.

Troubleshooting and limits

  • A result one record too early or late usually warrants checking whether the source includes its header.
  • These are row positions, not record-ID lookups. Sorting or otherwise rearranging the source changes which records occupy those positions.
  • Keep the full record width in array if related fields must travel together.
  • Start the result away from existing cells and check the installed WPS array workflow.
  • Negative positions, duplicates, reordered requests, zero, out-of-range numbers and precise error codes are outside this guide’s verified behavior. No claim of Excel parity is made.

Use ROWS to check the source height. If records should be selected by a condition rather than fixed positions, see FILTER.

Availability and version evidence

The official WPS CHOOSEROWS lesson and its linked video show a Chinese-language WPS spreadsheet interface with a WPS AI label. The actual demonstration was reviewed on October 19, 2026. No numeric build, exact edition, operating system, license or release-date label was verified. This is genuine historical product evidence, not an introduction-version claim or proof of support in every current desktop, web or mobile edition.

The video enters a formula at an output cell and shows an array result occupying neighboring cells. Confirm function recognition and the array-entry workflow in your intended installation before using these examples in a shared workbook. This guide does not import Excel’s complete spill, default-argument or error contract.

The cited timestamps refer to that vendor video. Vendor frames were inspected as source evidence; no vendor frame is embedded here or represented as a screenshot from our own testing. Original example outputs were independently reasoned and checked as array transformations, not executed in an installed WPS build. Unresolved behavior is excluded from the asserted recipe.
