RMB in WPS Spreadsheet: Render Rounded Currency Text

Text Intermediate WPS Spreadsheet

Use WPS RMB to produce currency-formatted text from a positive number, with explicit decimal places and a clear distinction from numeric cell formatting.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =RMB(123.456,2) is documented to produce RMB currency-formatted text with numeric portion 123.46. The lesson shows a yuan currency marker; its exact Unicode code point and spacing are not certified here.

Syntax and output type

=RMB(number,decimals)

Number is a numeric value, a reference to one or a formula returning one. Decimals controls rounding precision. The source says omission defaults to two decimal places and describes negative decimals as rounding to the left of the decimal point. The original examples below use explicit 2 and positive numbers below 1000, avoiding grouping and negative-format ambiguities.

RMB returns text rather than merely changing the display format of the original number. Applying a currency cell format to a numeric cell is a different operation: that cell remains numeric. Keep this distinction visible when designing a worksheet that both calculates and presents amounts.

Complete worksheet example

Enter the numeric values 123.456, 58 and 33.1 in A2:A4. Put =RMB(A2,2) in B2 and copy the reference down.

Input Expected numeric portion of currency text Decimal places
123.456 123.46 2
58 58.00 2
33.1 33.10 2

The output also carries the RMB currency marker described in the lesson. The table deliberately separates that documented formatting role from an unverified exact serialized string. A font-rendered currency sign in a historical screenshot does not by itself establish which Unicode character a current build stores.

The first result follows decimal rounding: the third decimal digit is 6, so the second decimal digit increases from 5 to 6. The other two controls show the intended two-place presentation rather than a change in the underlying source value’s economic meaning.

Advanced use: separate calculation and presentation columns

Keep A2 as the numeric source for later arithmetic, and use B2 as a presentation label. If a report needs currency text combined with a heading, use the text result in that display layer while retaining the original numeric amount for totals and reconciliations.

This separation avoids relying on implicit conversion back from a currency string. Although the official lesson discusses WPS converting some text values during calculations, it does not establish a universal parsing rule for every locale, separator or currency glyph. Do not assume that a reader’s application will interpret the same displayed text numerically in the same way.

Rounding a presentation value also differs from rounding every input before computing a total. A total calculated from original amounts may differ from the sum of separately rounded amounts. Choose and document the reporting rule; RMB itself does not decide that policy.

Scope and troubleshooting

The function’s name and currency-format example do not perform a currency exchange. An input of 123.456 is not converted from another currency at a market rate. The operation rounds and renders the supplied number.

Grouping separators, negative-number parentheses, large values, fractional decimals arguments, negative decimals and nonnumeric coercion are outside the worked controls. The source does not provide a complete error table, so no runtime error code is invented for those cases.

If exact text bytes matter for exporting to another system, verify the actual result in the intended WPS edition and locale. This guide establishes the documented text result and independently calculated rounded amount, not an exact current-build serialization or a legally compliant monetary document.

Evidence and version scope

The official WPS Academy RMB lesson, published 2019-06-25, has the applicability scope recorded below. It was reviewed on October 18, 2026. The applicability field explicitly names WPS Office for Windows Personal. The numeric build, introduction release and last supported version remain unknown. The source does not identify this function as deprecated or retired. Support in Linux, other editions and other platforms is not established by this lesson.

The worked examples are original documentation-based expectations, supported by independent reasoning and arithmetic where applicable. They were not executed in WPS. Historical vendor demonstrations are documentation, not our application tests; no screenshot or runtime precision guarantee is supplied. English names and comma separators follow the lesson. Localized entry, workbook interchange and exact output formatting require verification in the intended client.

  • FIXED: render rounded numeric text without this currency role.
  • TEXT: apply another explicit text-formatting pattern.
