TAKE in WPS Spreadsheet: Return a Leading Block with Header-Aware Counts
Use positive TAKE row and column counts in WPS, with exact inputs, smaller report examples and historical evidence.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: =TAKE(A1:D5,3,2) returns the first three rows and first two columns of A1:D5. If the first source row is a header, it counts as one of those three rows.
Syntax and arguments
=TAKE(array,rows,[columns])
Square brackets mark the optional columns argument; do not type them in a formula.
This guide covers positive whole-number counts within the source dimensions. The video demonstrates both a two-argument call that keeps the source width and a three-argument call that limits both dimensions. It does not justify assuming all Excel edge cases or defaults.
Example 1: preview two records with their heading
Enter the following in A1:D5:
| Row | A | B | C | D |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Item | Bin | Units | Price |
| 2 | Pen | East | 12 | 2.5 |
| 3 | Pad | West | 8 | 4 |
| 4 | Clip | East | 30 | 0.2 |
| 5 | Tape | South | 6 | 3 |
In F1, with F1:I3 clear, enter =TAKE(A1:D5,3). The independently expected result is the header followed by Pen and Pad, with all four fields:
| F | G | H | I |
|---|---|---|---|
| Item | Bin | Units | Price |
| Pen | East | 12 | 2.5 |
| Pad | West | 8 | 4 |
Three rows means one header plus two records. It does not mean three records plus an extra header. TAKE returns the beginning of the referenced block in its existing order; it does not rank the records by Units or Price.
Advanced case: constrain both dimensions
Put =TAKE(A1:D5,3,2) in F6, leaving F6:G8 clear. The expected output is Item, Bin / Pen, East / Pad, West. There are 3 × 2 = 6 cells. The retained columns are the leftmost two, so this is suitable for a short item-location preview.
If the requested preview should contain three records without a heading, use =TAKE(A2:D5,3,2) in F11. Expected F11:G13 is Pen, East / Pad, West / Clip, East. The count stays three while the source begins at the first data row. This provides a simple independent check on header handling.
What the video shows
The vendor’s =TAKE(A1:E21,6) returns a header plus five inventory records. The second formula, =TAKE(A1:E21,6,3), retains only serial, product and quantity. At 52.429 seconds the live dialog shows all three arguments and its result preview. The completed result is also visible at 55.98 seconds. The first five records run from serial 1 to 5, confirming that the six-row count includes the heading.
Troubleshooting and limits
- Count the header as an ordinary source row whenever it is included in the reference.
columns=2retains the first two columns; it does not select arbitrary columns 1 and 3.- If the wrong records appear, inspect the source’s order. These examples perform no sorting.
- Use a separate clear result rectangle and verify expansion in the intended WPS installation.
- The dialog mentions taking from the end with negative values, but these examples and observed results exercise positive counts only. Negative, zero, excessive or fractional counts and exact error behavior remain outside this guide’s verified examples.

Availability and version evidence
The official WPS TAKE lesson and its linked video show a Chinese-language WPS spreadsheet interface with a WPS AI label. The actual demonstration was reviewed on October 19, 2026. No numeric build, exact edition, operating system, license or release-date label was verified. This is genuine historical product evidence, not an introduction-version claim or proof of support in every current desktop, web or mobile edition.
The video shows an array result occupying neighboring cells. Confirm function recognition and array entry in your intended installation before sharing a workbook. Spill rules, argument defaults beyond the demonstrated forms and exact errors are not established here. Original example outputs were independently checked as array transformations, not executed in an installed WPS build.
