Save and Reopen a WPS Spreadsheet Workbook Safely

Keep an editable XLSX master, make a separate interchange copy, and check what survives reopening. File extension support alone does not prove that every formula, object or display setting transfers correctly.

Documentation-qualified; native Windows build and edition checks pending · Editorial standards

Quick answer

Use File → Save for the master, then File → Save As with a different name for a copy. Reopen both files and inspect formulas, identifiers and worksheet count before trusting a conversion.

Keep an editable XLSX master, make a separate interchange copy, and check what survives reopening. File extension support alone does not prove that every formula, object or display setting transfers correctly.

Before you start

Use a disposable XLSX workbook in the English Windows desktop application with the cited controls. The Academy lessons show a desktop-style interface but do not identify an OS build, region or edition. Record those details from your installation. This is a documentation-based exercise, not a native test or entitlement guarantee. If a required command is missing or requests payment, stop that branch. No macOS, mobile, Linux, browser or WPS 365 parity is implied.

Choose the file and location deliberately

The Windows Docs Center documents File → New/Open and File → Save/Save As. Start with a blank spreadsheet, then choose File → Save As. Select the XLSX workbook type if offered and name it WPS-Compatibility-Master.xlsx in a local practice folder. Check the selected type as well as the filename: renaming a suffix does not convert a file. If XLSX is absent, stop and establish the supported format before using this fixture.

The save guide labels its listed Windows operations Free, but does not certify a particular installed build or every conversion. Do not upload to an online converter. Keep a note of the complete folder and filename; the document name and active sheet name are different things.

Build a fixture with something to lose

Name the first sheet Ledger. Enter at A1:

Code	Item	Quantity	UnitPrice	Amount
0012	Cable, blue	3	12.5	=C2*D2
0047	Adapter	2	8	=C3*D3

Before entering codes, format A2:A3 as Text and then type 0012 and 0047; this avoids losing leading zeros during entry. If you pasted the whole block first and see 12 or 47, undo and set Text before re-entering. Set D2:E3 to two decimal places. Expected amounts are 37.50 and 16.00.

Enter Total in D5 and =SUM(E2:E3) in E5; expected result 53.50. Apply bold to row 1 and a light fill. Add a second sheet named Readme, put Compatibility check in A1, Expected total in A2, and 53.5 in B2. Save the master. No formula refers outside this workbook.

Close and reopen the master first

Close WPS-Compatibility-Master.xlsx and use the application’s Open command to reopen that exact local file. Activate Ledger and verify:

  • Codes display 0012 and 0047; the formula bar preserves them as text.
  • E2 contains =C2*D2, not just a pasted result, and returns 37.5.
  • E3 returns 16; E5 contains the SUM formula and returns 53.5.
  • The displayed two-decimal formatting and header fill remain.
  • Readme is still a separate second sheet with the expected total.

This saved, reopened XLSX is the final editable master. If any check fails, stop and repair the small fixture before creating exports. None of these reopen checks has been executed in a native WPS build as part of this guide’s preparation.

Make and prove a separate editable copy

Choose File → Save As, retain the XLSX type and enter WPS-Compatibility-Review.xlsx. A distinct destination is essential: cancel an overwrite warning if it names the master. The official procedure creates a new file while leaving the original available; that is not permission to choose the same destination.

Check the active filename, then change Ledger!C2 from 3 to 4 in the Review copy. E2 should become 50 and E5 should become 66. Save with Ctrl+S, close and reopen the Review copy, and check those values and both sheets. Now open the master separately: its quantity must still be 3 and total 53.5. This two-file test distinguishes a genuine Save As copy from continuing to edit the original under a mistaken sheet-tab name.

Evaluate another format without promising fidelity

If a recipient needs another workbook format, return to the master and use File → Save As → More Formats. Inspect the actual list; this guide does not establish that every region/build exposes XLS, ODS or CSV. If the requested type is absent, stop rather than renaming the extension. If available, select it and use a new filename. Read the warning before confirming and cancel if the stated losses are unacceptable.

Reopen the converted file and run the same checks: two sheets, text codes, formulas rather than fixed results, amounts 37.5 and 16, total 53.5, and readable formatting. Record discrepancies instead of declaring compatibility from the suffix. Plain-text CSV, if offered, is not a two-sheet workbook backup and cannot preserve workbook formatting and formula structure as a workbook does. A detailed CSV import procedure is outside these operational sources. Keep the XLSX master regardless of the converted result.

Record the result and troubleshoot

For each output, record filename, format selected, application build/edition, warnings, sheet count, formulas versus values, codes, amount total and visual differences. A receiving program must run its own checks before this becomes a cross-program compatibility claim.

If saving fails, check that the selected local folder is writable and the drive has space. If a second sheet is missing, verify the selected output format. If a formula became a constant, inspect the master and converted formula bars side by side. Do not repair a failed conversion by overwriting the only original. The receiving application must also reopen and check its copy before anyone claims cross-application fidelity.

These are documentation-based instructions. The fixture expectations were checked independently; no native WPS run, application screenshot, installed-edition entitlement test or cross-program round trip is claimed. Academy page dates do not identify an application build.
