Fix formula text showing instead of results in WPS Spreadsheet

Separate formula display mode from text entries, then repair one intended calculation and verify its result safely.

Quick answer: First check whether the whole sheet is showing formulas. If only particular cells are affected, inspect their format and their actual entry. Changing a Text cell to General may need to be followed by re-entering the intended formula.

Start with a harmless calculation

In a blank practice workbook enter 8 in A2 and 5 in B2. Set C2 to General, type =A2+B2, and press Enter. The expected result is 13. In D2 enter =SUM(A2:B2), also expected to return 13. See SUM.

Use this tiny sheet to compare behavior before making changes to your real file. Keep a backup of the real workbook. Text may be intentional in formula documentation, labels or imported code; do not convert an entire workbook indiscriminately.

If many formula cells show their expressions

  1. Open the Formulas tab and inspect Show Formulas.
  2. If it is enabled, toggle it off.
  3. Check C2 and D2. Both should display 13, while selecting either cell should still let you inspect its formula in the formula bar.

WPS’s formula-display troubleshooting page includes a WPS-specific procedure for Show Formulas, General format and re-entry. It identifies no tested numeric build. This guide uses the menu control rather than assuming a keyboard shortcut works in every keyboard layout.

Displaying formulas is an inspection choice. Do not overwrite formulas with their results to “fix” that view: doing so would remove their calculations.

If just one cell shows formula-like text

  1. Select the affected cell. Inspect its full entry in the formula bar rather than judging alignment or clipping.
  2. Confirm that it is supposed to calculate. For this sample, the intended entry is exactly =A2+B2.
  3. Open Format Cells, choose General, and confirm.
  4. Edit the cell and re-enter the intended expression with an ordinary equals sign at the beginning. Press Enter. For the known sample, replacing its entire entry is safer than a workbook-wide replacement operation.
  5. Verify 13, then change A2 to 10. The repaired result must change to 15. Restore A2 to 8 afterward.

A leading apostrophe or space is worth inspecting when the entry is intended to be a calculation. Do not remove those characters from identifiers or deliberate text. The official Windows Show Formulas FAQ specifically notes that an apostrophe-prefixed formula may be text, and that Show Formulas changes the view without changing calculation logic. For the known sample, retype the exact expression beginning with =; avoid global prefix removal.

Check the repair rather than the appearance

A cell displaying the literal string =A2+B2 may be stored as text. In a separate cell, ISTEXT can help distinguish a text value from the numeric result: =ISTEXT(C2) should be FALSE for the working numeric sample. Do not use that test as proof that all formulas return numbers: a valid formula can deliberately return text.

If you see an old number rather than formula text, that is a different symptom. Check calculation settings and dependencies instead of stripping text prefixes. If you see a formula error, calculation has at least been attempted; investigate its syntax or references. A formula can also intentionally return a string that begins with an equals sign.

If the tiny blank-workbook test works but the original does not, compare just the affected cell’s entry and format. Preserve its intended references when repairing it, and verify an input change propagates. Avoid bulk Find/Replace until you know exactly which cells are safe to change.

Version and testing scope

This guide follows the cited WPS desktop documentation. The exact installed build and free-versus-paid availability were not verified. It was not tested in WPS Spreadsheet; expected values were checked independently, and no application screenshots are claimed. Desktop controls do not establish Android or Web parity. Test your actual edition with the small sample before applying the procedure to an important workbook.
