Keep Headers Visible in WPS Spreadsheet

Keep two heading rows and an identifier column visible while navigating a wide register. A freeze boundary is a viewing aid; it does not create repeated print titles or protect cells from editing.

Documentation-qualified; native Windows build and edition checks pending · Editorial standards

Quick answer

Select B3 and use Home → Freeze Panes to preserve rows 1–2 and column A. Test by scrolling in both directions; freezing is a viewing aid, not worksheet protection or print-title setup.

Keep two heading rows and an identifier column visible while navigating a wide register. A freeze boundary is a viewing aid; it does not create repeated print titles or protect cells from editing.

Before you start

Use a disposable XLSX workbook in the English Windows desktop application with the cited controls. The Academy lessons show a desktop-style interface but do not identify an OS build, region or edition. Record those details from your installation. This is a documentation-based exercise, not a native test or entitlement guarantee. If a required command is missing or requests payment, stop that branch. No macOS, mobile, Linux, browser or WPS 365 parity is implied.

Understand the documented interface difference

The older WPS Help page explicitly targets Spreadsheets 2016 and uses View → Freeze. The WPS-specific Academy lesson describes Home → Freeze Panes, including a context-sensitive custom boundary. A page retrieved today is not proof of a current application build. Use the path that actually exists in your Windows interface; if neither does, pause rather than substituting mobile Tools menus. The separate side-by-side Academy lesson covers two views of the same workbook, not synchronized comparison of unrelated files.

Build an auditable long-sheet fixture

Create WPS-Register.xlsx with sheet Register. In A1, enter Service register. Leave the rest of row 1 blank and unmerged. Paste these headers into A2:

ID	Day	Team	Hours	Note	Owner	Queue	Location	Flag	Check

Fill the initial data row with the following:

  • A3: =ROW()-2
  • B3: =DATE(2026,10,1)+A3-1
  • C3: Desk
  • D3: =A3*2
  • E3: Inspect the request and confirm the recorded hours
  • F3: Ari
  • G3: General
  • H3: Local
  • I3: Open
  • J3: =A3+D3

Copy A3:J3 down to row 42 and format B3:B42 as dates. Set columns wide enough to read their headings, so horizontal scrolling is actually needed at an ordinary window size. Before freezing, verify A3=1, A42=40, D42=80, and J42=120. The last date is November 9, 2026. Do not widen the entire application to eliminate the horizontal test.

Freeze the two-row, one-column boundary

  1. Activate Register in WPS-Register.xlsx. Scroll to the top-left so the selection and proposed boundary are visible.
  2. If a freeze is already present, choose the available Unfreeze Panes command first.
  3. Select B3, immediately below the two rows to preserve and to the right of the one column to preserve.
  4. In the Academy-style interface, open Home → Freeze Panes and select the custom entry describing row 2 and column A. In the 2016 interface, use the documented View-tab Freeze control with the same boundary selection. Inspect the displayed boundary before confirming.
  5. Scroll downward until data around row 30 is in the moving region. Rows 1 and 2 should remain at the top, with the title and field names intact.
  6. Scroll horizontally until a later column such as H is in the moving region. Column A should remain at the left, allowing you to match identifiers with later fields.
  7. At the last record, verify ID 40 still corresponds to Hours 80 and Check 120. Freezing must not rearrange or recalculate the fixture differently.

Selecting A3 would preserve two rows without a left-side identifier column. Selecting B2 would preserve only row 1, leaving the field headings in row 2 free to scroll away. The boundary belongs above and left of the active cell, not through that cell.

Save and reopen the useful view

Return the moving region to the top-left while retaining the freeze. Save WPS-Register.xlsx, close it and reopen it. Activate Register, scroll down and right again, and inspect the two headings and ID column. If the freeze does not survive this format/build round trip, record that limitation rather than claiming persistence; the workbook values should still match the four checks above.

Before sharing a workbook, remember that the recipient’s application may interpret view settings differently. A freeze also does not guarantee that printed pages repeat headings. Print layout needs its own separate verification.

Optional reset practice in a named copy

Only after the main workbook has been saved and reopened, use Save As to make WPS-Register-Experiment.xlsx. Verify that filename before experimenting. On Register, use Unfreeze Panes, then scroll: the title, headings and ID column should now be able to leave the viewport. Return to the top-left, select B3 and reapply the custom boundary. The sheet’s data and calculated checks must be unchanged through both actions.

You can separately try Freeze Top Row and Freeze First Column, resetting between them. Do not assume choosing those two presets successively combines them; use B3 and the custom boundary for the final two-dimensional view.

Troubleshooting and comparison limits

A huge frozen area usually means the wrong active cell was used; unfreeze in the experiment copy and retry from B3. A sheet that seems immovable can have most of the visible window occupied by frozen rows or columns; enlarge the window enough to recover its controls. Split panes are independent scrolling regions and are not the same feature. Hidden rows can confuse which labels are visible; inspect row numbers before changing the freeze.

Compare two sheets in the same workbook

Add a sheet named Checks with A1 Last ID, B1 40, A2 Last hours, B2 80. Choose View → New Window, then View → Arrange All and select an arrangement offered by the dialog. In one window activate Register; in the other activate Checks. Compare Register’s last record with the two check values. These are two views of one file, not two independent copies. Editing through either window changes the same workbook. Return to a single large view with the workbook window’s Maximize control. Do not infer synchronized scrolling or a two-file comparison command from this procedure.

Official references

These are documentation-based instructions. The fixture expectations were checked independently; no native WPS run, application screenshot, installed-edition entitlement test or cross-program round trip is claimed. Academy page dates do not identify an application build.
