Keep long tracking IDs and leading zeros in WPS Spreadsheet

Store tracking identifiers as text before entry or import, and compare every digit with the original source.

Official-documentation reviewed; sample data independently checked; not tested in WPS Spreadsheet Ā· Editorial standards

Quick answer: Treat tracking IDs as text before WPS interprets them as numbers. Changing the format after digits or zeros have disappeared cannot recover the original identifier. Start again from the untouched source.

Practice values and their exact checks

Download synthetic tracking IDs, but do not double-click it as a preservation test. The expected TrackingID values are:

Worksheet row Exact text Character count
2 001234567890123456 18
3 123456789012345678 18
4 000042 6
5 12E05 5

These are invented identifiers, not quantities. Their letters, zeros and final digits are meaningful. Two equally long strings can still be different IDs.

Safest small test: format before typing

  1. In a new workbook enter TrackingID in A1. Select empty A2:A5.
  2. Press Ctrl+1, choose the Text category in Format Cells, and confirm. This is the desktop workflow in WPS’s Format cells lesson.
  3. Type the four exact values above into A2:A5. Type directly into the prepared cells for this test; do not copy already-converted spreadsheet numbers.
  4. Select each cell and compare its complete value with the original. Widen column A if necessary. Check both the leading zeros and the last three digits of each long ID.
  5. In B2 enter =LEN(A2) and fill it down through B5. Expected results are 18, 18, 6, 5. See LEN for the character-count check.
  6. Save a workbook copy and reopen it. Repeat the exact-text and length checks before using it as a master file.

WPS’s scientific-notation lesson specifically warns that entering an 18-digit numeric order number can replace its final digits with zeros, and recommends Text formatting in advance. Scientific notation can also be a display choice: the presence or absence of an E on screen is not a complete precision check.

Import a larger file without trusting automatic conversion

Use the CSV re-import workflow with comma as the separator for this tracking file. At the final column-format stage, select the TrackingID column and choose Text, if the installed wizard offers it, before finishing. Verify all four values above. If the preview or import controls cannot keep identifiers as text, cancel rather than accepting a damaged result; use the small manual test or ask the exporter for a workbook with an explicitly text-typed ID column.

The WPS import lesson documents a column-format stage but its written example uses General. Text-column import behavior therefore needs checking in your build; formatting a destination column alone is not a guarantee that an import will respect it. CSV itself has no persistent Text cell type, and enclosing a digit string in CSV quotes does not make its eventual spreadsheet type certain.

Why padding and widening are insufficient

A custom zero-padding format can make a short number look like a fixed-width code. That does not establish that the stored value contains those leading zeros. Likewise, TEXT can create a formatted string from an existing value, but cannot reconstruct unknown digits already discarded during conversion. Do not apply numeric conversion, arithmetic, or ā€œconvert to numberā€ repairs to an identifier column.

For an existing damaged sheet, make a copy, locate the original export, and redo entry or import safely. If the original is unavailable, request it again; guessing missing digits is not repair. If a CSV is required downstream, inspect the exported file as plain text and test the receiver’s import route. Reopening it by double-clicking is another conversion opportunity.
