WPS Spreadsheet Versions and Free Editing

Quick answer: WPS documents free basic spreadsheet editing, including opening and saving Excel files, while also offering paid services. A free installer does not make every template, PDF tool, AI feature or cloud benefit free. Start with the official free spreadsheet editor description and check the edition before choosing a workflow.

Checked October 20, 2026. This is documentation-based guidance. We did not install WPS, sign in, start a trial, execute a workbook or capture native screenshots.

Free Standard versus paid extras

The official plan comparison identifies WPS Standard Free and distinguishes basic office capabilities and templates from advanced offerings. It also describes limits on AI use in paid offerings. Consequently, the presence of an AI button is not evidence of unlimited free use.

For a free-only exercise, use ordinary cells, formulas and local spreadsheet files. If the selected tool displays a subscription, payment or trial requirement, stop that particular action and choose a documented free workflow. Do not enter payment information merely because the application was initially downloaded at no cost.

The official spreadsheet page describes desktop offline/local work and Excel file editing. That is the bounded route covered here, not a promise that cloud collaboration, mobile behavior or every advanced feature is identical on all platforms.

Version numbers belong to a platform

WPS has separate Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile offerings. Record the operating system, installed build and source of the package before comparing instructions. Avoid calling all of them “the latest WPS” without this context.

As a concrete dated example, the official Linux update history lists WPS Office 2023 for Linux, build 12.1.2.29182, under October 10, 2026. This is a Linux release observation, not a Windows, Mac or mobile build number. The product name’s year is not the date of its most recent update.

That Linux update describes international account/cloud integration and in-application subscriptions. Their introduction does not mean premium services became free. An update can change the interface or add optional services while the exercise you need remains simple local editing.

Use release information for the actual platform when considering an update. Preserve a working copy of important spreadsheets first, and compare the recorded build after the update rather than assuming it completed because an installer was downloaded.

A proposed basic editing check

This original manual check has independently calculated answers; it was not executed in WPS Spreadsheet:

  1. Create a disposable blank local spreadsheet. Enter 12 in B2 and 18 in B3.
  2. Enter =SUM(B2:B3) in B4. Expect 30.
  3. Replace B3 with 20. Expect 32.
  4. Save a disposable XLSX file in a known local folder. Reopen it and inspect the formula and result.

If you cannot save, check whether the destination is local or an account-dependent cloud location before diagnosing a formula problem. If a premium prompt appears, identify the exact command that triggered it instead of assuming all spreadsheet editing requires payment. If B4 displays an error, record its text, the formula and the build.

WPS advertises Excel-format compatibility, but that is not independent proof that every imported workbook behaves identically. Test important formulas, layout and automation separately, keeping the original untouched. Passing this small SUM check does not establish macro compatibility or validate an entire migration.
