Zoho Sheet #SPILL!: Recover an Array Result Without Losing Nearby Data
A blocked output area is different from an incorrect filter condition. A formula can identify the right records yet have nowhere to display them. Zoho’s published error troubleshooting tip describes #SPILL! when existing cell content obstructs an array result. Inspect the reported obstruction before deleting anything.
This reference develops the output-area diagnosis, not another introduction to FILTER. Zoho’s FILTER reference confirms that its result expands into adjacent cells and can change size with the source.
Build a controlled obstruction
Use a disposable web worksheet containing no private information. Enter this source in A1:C4:
| Row | A: Item | B: State | C: Units |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Item | State | Units |
| 2 | Desk | Ready | 4 |
| 3 | Chair | Waiting | 7 |
| 4 | Lamp | Ready | 2 |
Put the text Keep this note in E3. Leave E2:G2 and F3:G3 empty. In E2 enter:
=FILTER(A2:C4;B2:B4="Ready")
The independently derived result contains two records and three columns: Desk / Ready / 4, followed by Lamp / Ready / 2. It therefore needs E2:G3. E3 is in that rectangle, so the note deliberately occupies a required output cell. The documented obstruction diagnosis is #SPILL!; this page does not claim to have reproduced its exact tooltip in an authenticated session.
Repair the layout, not the source records
- Select the failing formula cell and inspect the error information. Zoho’s tip describes an error icon that offers possible resolutions. Confirm that the reported problem is an occupied output area.
- Inspect E3 and record its contents. In a real workbook, an obstruction might be someone else’s note or calculation, not disposable clutter.
- For this synthetic exercise, copy
Keep this noteinto an empty J3, compare the text, then clear only E3’s contents. Do not delete a row, column or source record. - Check that E2:G3 now contains the two complete records above. J3 should still contain the preserved note. There should be no duplicate headers because the source range begins at row 2.
- Compare units 4 and 2 with C2 and C4. Their independently checked total is 6. A result that merely stops showing an error is not enough if the wrong rows or columns appear.
For real formulas, copying a formula to a different address can change relative references. Preserve the original workbook and inspect dependencies before relocating calculation cells. Alternatively, plan a separate result area rather than clearing valuable content to accommodate an array.
Test the next expansion
Keep E4:G4 empty, then change B3 from Waiting to Ready. Now all three source records qualify. The expected rectangle is E2:G4, in source order: Desk, Chair, Lamp. Units are 4, 7, 2, totaling 13.
This change checks more than the original repair. A nearby note might be outside today’s result but inside tomorrow’s larger result. Reserve enough space for expected growth or put the output on a dedicated report sheet. Do not type annotations into the result rectangle.
Restore B3 to Waiting. The expected logical result returns to the two Ready records and total 6. Inspect the current output rather than assuming an earlier display remains accurate. The exercise does not certify how every exported format stores or refreshes dynamic arrays.
When clearing a cell is the wrong repair
If the error information names a different problem, stop this procedure. A condition range that does not match the source dimensions needs a formula repair, not a larger destination. A zero-match case is also a different diagnosis; this fixture deliberately keeps two matches and does not assume an undocumented empty-result representation.
Do not wrap the formula in IFERROR to conceal a collision. Do not remove protection or another person’s data without authorization. Retain a sanitized note of the formula, expected dimensions and actual error if the cause is still unclear.
Scope and verification
Checked October 21, 2026 for Zoho Sheet’s rolling English web service using ordinary FILTER functionality, not a paid add-on. Semicolons follow Zoho’s documented examples; use the separator required by your workbook. Source selection, output coordinates, order and totals were checked independently, but no signed-in execution, screenshot, mobile behavior or desktop parity is claimed.
Continue with Zoho troubleshooting and the separate invalid-reference diagnosis.
