Zoho Sheet CLEAN Function: Syntax, Examples and Troubleshooting
Remove ASCII nonprinting control characters from imported text strings.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in Zoho Sheet. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: To remove a line-feed control character from Ready followed by a line break and Now, use =CLEAN("Ready"&CHAR(10)&"Now"). The expected result is ReadyNow, not Ready Now: CLEAN removes the control character and does not insert a replacement space.
Zoho specifies removal of the first 32 nonprinting 7-bit ASCII codes. This is useful with imported records containing tabs or line breaks, but it is not a general Unicode sanitation or security feature.
Exact Zoho syntax and parameters
=CLEAN(text)
| Argument | Required? | Definition |
|---|---|---|
text |
Yes | Text, a cell reference, or an expression containing control characters to remove. |
Zoho’s official remarks limit the described removals to control codes 0 through 31 from 7-bit ASCII. For reproducibility this article constructs control characters using CHAR(7), CHAR(9) and CHAR(10) rather than relying on an importer to preserve invisible characters. The companion CSV is ordinary printable text and does not itself contain these controls.
Practice worksheet: eight fictitious records
For repeatable examples, create a new, empty Zoho Sheet and paste or import the companion CSV batches/zoho-sheet/2026-10-11T0745Z-text-case-clean-batch08/zoho-text-clean-case-practice.csv beginning at A1. Its first row is the header; rows 2 through 9 contain the fictitious records below. Keep identifier columns C and D formatted as text so values such as ca-0041 retain their zeros and hyphen. Compare the imported cells to the table before calculating; an import tool can change apparent values.

Use empty cells starting in F2 for demonstration formulas. Do not paste output formulas on top of source columns A:D. All expected results refer to the listed source data, not a live or connected customer database.
Step-by-step worked examples
- Open the companion practice table or a blank Zoho Sheet. No special import is required for this first demonstration.
- Select an empty result cell F2 and enter:
=CLEAN("Ready"&CHAR(10)&"Now") - Expected F2:
ReadyNow.CHAR(10)represents a line feed; the nonprinting character disappears. - Compare these independent demonstration formulas:
| Formula | Expected output | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
=CLEAN("Zoho"&CHAR(7)&"Sheet") |
ZohoSheet |
Remove ASCII bell (code 7), matching Zoho’s example. |
=CLEAN("A"&CHAR(9)&"B") |
AB |
Remove tab code 9. |
=CLEAN("Ready"&CHAR(10)&"Now") |
ReadyNow |
Remove line feed code 10. |
=CLEAN("East Depot") |
East Depot |
No control character to remove. |
All resulting literal strings were checked by an independent Python filter for ASCII control codes 0–31. Python string filtering is not Zoho runtime execution. Do not use an HTML-rendered line break as evidence of which code exists in a worksheet cell.
Advanced scenario
Advanced: clean an imported ID before a strict comparison
Assume D2 contains CA-0041 in the companion practice worksheet. In empty G2, enter:
=IF(EXACT(CLEAN("CA"&CHAR(10)&"-0041");D2);"MATCH";"REVIEW")
Expected G2: MATCH. The generated control character is removed, leaving exactly CA-0041 to compare with D2. This demonstrates CLEAN followed by EXACT in a guarded check; real input cells should be used instead of the demonstration literal.
If an imported source has tab-separated words, simply removing a tab can join adjacent words. Where preserving a visible separator matters, replace specific control codes with a space before CLEAN, or clean in a dedicated data-preparation process; verify the chosen CHAR/SUBSTITUTE expression in Zoho first.
Edge cases and limitations
- Not comprehensive Unicode cleaning: Zoho’s documentation explicitly discusses only ASCII codes 0–31; it does not guarantee removal of code 127, no-break spaces, zero-width characters, or other Unicode controls.
- Words may join: CLEAN removes characters rather than replacing them with spaces. Expect
ReadyNow, notReady Now. - Whitespace distinction: Regular spaces are not the same as ASCII tabs. Use TRIM to address redundant ordinary spaces when appropriate; compare the functions on real data.
- Invisible data: A visually blank-looking cell may contain a nonprinting character. Check the code points when performing robust external data import validation.
- No universal malware/safety guarantee: Text cleanup is not a security sanitizer. Retain raw input and audit transformations.
- Locale/platform: Interpretation of imported line endings and non-ASCII characters can vary. Native Zoho import/rendering verification is outstanding.
Errors and troubleshooting
Universal troubleshooting checklist
- Check that the intended cell is text, not a date, number or imported value reinterpreted by the editor.
- Confirm that the function name is spelled correctly and that text literals use straight double quotation marks.
- Recheck the cell address and the contents of the specific input row; copying a formula downward changes relative references.
- If a formula unexpectedly shows
#NAME!, inspect the function spelling and quoted literals. A#REF!may indicate an invalid or removed reference;#VALUE!is a common argument-type warning. Zoho’s generic error table does not establish that each sample here produces these errors. - When a nested formula fails, calculate each inner expression in its own helper cell and compare with the stated expected result before combining the functions.
- If behaviour differs from these documentation-derived expectations, capture the Zoho Sheet environment, account locale, formula and actual displayed result for editorial review; do not quietly replace documentation claims with guesses.
Excel, Google Sheets and other spreadsheet compatibility
Microsoft Excel’s CLEAN reference also specifies ASCII codes 0–31, and explicitly warns that additional Unicode nonprinting codes (127, 129, 141, 143, 144 and 157) are not removed by Excel CLEAN alone. Zoho documents the same ASCII scope but does not separately document those Unicode cases here; do not claim parity outside codes 0–31. Both platforms have conceptually similar single-argument formulas for the stated ASCII examples.
