Zoho Sheet COUPNUM: Count remaining scheduled coupon payments

Financial Intermediate Zoho Sheet

Count regular coupon dates with COUPNUM in Zoho Sheet, using annual, semiannual and quarterly schedules and explicit date inputs.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: for settlement May 15, 2025, maturity January 15, 2028, semiannual payments and basis 0, the independently counted regular schedule contains 6 remaining coupon dates. This is a count of payments, not a number of years.

Syntax and arguments

=COUPNUM(settlement; maturity; frequency; [basis])

Supply date values for settlement and maturity. Frequency is payments per year: 1, 2 or 4. Basis defaults to 0. The documented basis choices are 0 US/NASD 30/360, 1 actual/actual, 2 actual/360, 3 actual/365 and 4 European 30/360. Use explicit basis in examples so the convention is visible. Enter complete inputs

In a fresh worksheet, enter:

Cell Input
B2 =DATE(2025;5;15)
B3 =DATE(2028;1;15)
B4 2
B5 0

In B7 enter =COUPNUM(B2;B3;B4;B5). The independent regular-schedule reference is 6. The equivalent fully explicit formula is:

=COUPNUM(DATE(2025;5;15);DATE(2028;1;15);2;0)

Using DATE avoids ambiguous text such as 5/6/2025. Format B2 and B3 as dates, while B7 should be a plain number. No cash amount, coupon percentage or purchase price is needed to count schedule dates.

Verify the six dates independently

For a regular semiannual schedule anchored at January 15, 2028 maturity, the future dates after the chosen settlement are:

  1. July 15, 2025
  2. January 15, 2026
  3. July 15, 2026
  4. January 15, 2027
  5. July 15, 2027
  6. January 15, 2028

The final maturity date is included as a remaining payment date. The earlier January 15, 2025 coupon is before settlement and is not counted. This enumeration supplies a transparent mathematical/calendar check; it is not a claim that the formula was executed in a Zoho workbook.

Do not estimate the answer by multiplying a fractional year difference by frequency and rounding arbitrarily. The result depends on actual scheduled dates relative to settlement.

Compare frequencies without changing the dates

With the same May 15, 2025 settlement and January 15, 2028 maturity:

Frequency Independent remaining count Schedule interpretation
1 3 January 15 in 2026, 2027 and 2028
2 6 January/July pattern listed above
4 11 July/October 2025; four dates in 2026; four in 2027; January 2028

For quarterly payments, the April 15, 2025 date is already past. These examples deliberately use the 15th of a month, avoiding month-end and leap-day schedule ambiguities. Frequency changes the spacing of payments; it is not a multiplier for the face value of a security.

Practical use: inspect a schedule boundary

For semiannual payments, moving settlement from July 14 to July 16, 2025 crosses a coupon date. The independent remaining count falls from 6 to 5. Use the same maturity, frequency 2 and basis 0 in both formulas. This comparison avoids settlement exactly on the coupon date, whose endpoint handling is not established by these examples.

A second near-maturity control uses settlement November 15, 2027. Annual, semiannual and quarterly schedules all have just 1 remaining date, January 15, 2028. A short remaining time does not necessarily mean zero remaining payments.

COUPPCD answers a different question: the previous coupon date. Keeping its date alongside the count can help audit the schedule period without treating either output as an accrued-interest amount.

Errors and modelling limits

Zoho documents #NUM! for a frequency outside 1,2,4, basis outside 0–4, or settlement after maturity. Thus frequency 3 is not a valid “three payments per year” input for this contract. The article’s generic error list is not evidence for every coercion or equality boundary. Official error reference.

This regular-schedule model does not describe an actual security’s holiday adjustments, payment delays, irregular first or last coupons, or contractual entitlement rules. The function is a worksheet calculation, not confirmation of a real payment or financial advice. Inspect the actual instrument’s schedule separately when modelling real data.

Availability and evidence scope

The rolling Zoho Sheet help was checked October 18, 2026. It documents current support but does not establish a desktop release number, first introduction date, mobile parity or retirement history. No account, workbook upload, native execution or screenshot was used for these examples. The complete schedules are independent calendar reasoning, and the dated help supports the function contract and stated errors. A familiar function name does not establish identical boundary behavior in another spreadsheet.
