Zoho Sheet COUPPCD: Find the coupon date before settlement

Financial Intermediate Zoho Sheet

Find the previous regular coupon date with COUPPCD in Zoho Sheet, distinguishing date formatting, payment frequency and schedule boundaries.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: with settlement May 15, 2025, maturity January 15, 2028, semiannual payments and basis 0, the independent regular-schedule previous coupon date is January 15, 2025.

Syntax and date inputs

=COUPPCD(settlement; maturity; frequency; [basis])

Frequency is 1, 2 or 4 payments per year. Basis defaults to 0; documented choices are US/NASD 30/360, actual/actual, actual/360, actual/365 and European 30/360 for values 0 through 4 respectively. The result identifies a coupon date before settlement. Zoho COUPPCD reference.

Reproduce a complete example

Enter =DATE(2025;5;15) in B2, =DATE(2028;1;15) in B3, the number 2 in B4, and 0 in B5. In B7 enter:

=COUPPCD(B2;B3;B4;B5)

Format B7 as an unambiguous date, such as year-month-day. The independent reference is 2025-01-15. The same example without cell dependencies is:

=COUPPCD(DATE(2025;5;15);DATE(2028;1;15);2;0)

All dates and parameters are supplied here; an output without its settlement, maturity and frequency cannot be independently checked. DATE constructs dates from explicit numeric components rather than relying on locale-sensitive strings.

Trace the schedule backward

Starting at the January 15, 2028 maturity and stepping backward in six-month intervals gives July 15, 2027; January 15, 2027; July 15, 2026; January 15, 2026; July 15, 2025; and January 15, 2025.

The May 15, 2025 settlement lies between January 15 and July 15, 2025. Therefore January 15 is the previous regular coupon date. This is an independently constructed calendar schedule, not a recorded Zoho runtime output.

The previous coupon date is not automatically the date of purchase, issue date, or most recent business day. COUPPCD has no issue-date argument, so it cannot use a separately negotiated issue date unless that information is represented indirectly by the supplied regular schedule assumptions.

Compare annual, semiannual and quarterly schedules

Keep settlement May 15, 2025 and maturity January 15, 2028:

Frequency Previous date from the independent regular schedule
1 January 15, 2025
2 January 15, 2025
4 April 15, 2025

Annual and semiannual results happen to agree for this settlement. That agreement does not mean the schedules are identical: their next payment dates differ. Quarterly spacing adds an April payment before May settlement.

For settlement November 15, 2027, the corresponding previous dates are January 15, July 15 and October 15, 2027 for frequencies 1,2,4. These second examples show a situation where all three answers differ.

Practical use: bracket the current coupon period

Move semiannual settlement from July 14 to July 16, 2025 while keeping maturity unchanged. The previous schedule date changes from January 15 to July 15, 2025. A before-and-after comparison helps identify a period transition without assuming the exact settlement-on-coupon-date convention.

COUPNUM independently counts the remaining schedule dates. In the same transition its count falls from 6 to 5. Together, a previous date and remaining count can expose an accidentally wrong frequency or maturity anchor.

Do not subtract the previous coupon date from settlement and call the result accrued interest. A date difference alone lacks the coupon amount, day-count convention and other required financial terms. This function returns schedule context, not a cash entitlement.

Serial values, display and errors

The official examples display numbers such as 43020, indicating that a date result may appear as a serial when number formatting is used. The complete original inputs are not supplied in the article text, so those numbers are not reused as proof for the new examples here. This guide states calendar dates without assuming a raw serial epoch for every environment.

Zoho documents #NUM! for invalid frequency, basis outside 0–4, and settlement after maturity. The short page does not settle every end-of-month, fractional argument or settlement-equals-maturity boundary. Use explicit valid inputs and distinguish a formatting problem from a calculation error. Official reference.

The examples avoid month-end dates and use regular unadjusted schedules. They do not establish holiday adjustment, irregular coupons or legal payment deadlines for a real security.

Availability and evidence scope

The rolling Zoho Sheet help was checked October 18, 2026. It documents current support but does not establish a desktop release number, first introduction date, mobile parity or retirement history. No account, workbook upload, native execution or screenshot was used for these examples. The complete schedules are independent calendar reasoning, and the dated help supports the function contract and stated errors. A familiar function name does not establish identical boundary behavior in another spreadsheet.
