Zoho Sheet ISREF: Test References and Named Ranges
Recognize cell references, ranges and defined names with ISREF; avoid confusing address strings with references.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in Zoho Sheet. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: =ISREF(A7) is documented by Zoho as TRUE because A7 is a reference. =ISREF(1) is documented as FALSE because the numeric constant is not a reference. A valid defined name that refers to a range also passes. This is about the expression’s reference nature, not whether the cell is populated or whether its content resembles an address. [Z-MAIN]
Exact Zoho syntax and required parameter
=ISREF(value)
| Position | Parameter | Required? | Accepted concept | Default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | value |
Yes | An expression to test for a cell/range reference, such as A7; a valid defined name is also recognized. |
No omitted-argument default documented. |
Output is Boolean TRUE for a recognized reference, or FALSE for a nonreference literal under the illustrated cases. The function doesn’t return the referenced value or the address as text. Zoho’s official remarks explicitly say defined names can return TRUE. When entering a name, first create a defined name that refers to a cell/range; the string "Range" and a bare defined name Range are not the same expression. [Z-MAIN]
Worked examples with no hidden source workbook
Open a blank sheet. You do not need to populate A7 for the official cell-reference demonstration; the reference is the item being tested. Enter each formula in a separate empty result cell.
| Formula | Expected | Evidence level and why |
|---|---|---|
=ISREF(A7) |
TRUE | Official Zoho example of a cell reference. |
=ISREF(1) |
FALSE | Official Zoho example of a numeric literal. |
=ISREF(A2:B5) |
TRUE | Independently inferred from Zoho’s documented ‘cell or range’ definition; native test outstanding. |
=ISREF("A7") |
FALSE | Independently inferred because quoted text is not a reference; native test outstanding. |
These expectations deliberately mix two verbatim official source cases with derived cases; the last two must not be relabelled vendor-tested. If a sheet displays a different value, record the observed behaviour and prefer the official single-cell test as the first diagnostic. [Z-MAIN]
Named-range setup, the official third example
Select A2:A5, define a workbook name Range pointing to those cells through the spreadsheet’s named-range interface, then evaluate:
=ISREF(Range)
Zoho’s official example returns TRUE when Range is a properly defined name. If the name has not been defined, you have not reproduced the official setup. A #NAME! may signal an unresolved or mistyped name; Zoho lists this as a common diagnostic in its error glossary. The phrase “defined names return TRUE” is a source-backed claim; the exact UI location for creating names in a particular app version is not asserted here. [Z-MAIN]
Application: audit formula references after a workbook handoff
A small handover test area can contain =ISREF(A7), =ISREF(A2:B5), and =ISREF(Range) where Range is defined. This tests that the formula parser and name resolution in the recipient’s spreadsheet still recognize your intended references. The literal =ISREF(1) serves as a negative control. Capture the actual outcomes in a review log; a typed address such as A7 in another cell is a string and should not be treated as a reference until deliberately converted. [Z-MAIN]
You can combine ISREF with Zoho’s official IF function to produce a readable label:
=IF(ISREF(A7);"Reference expression";"Not a reference")
The independently expected outcome is Reference expression. This is a composed usage of two documented function definitions, not a direct result published by Zoho. It is useful as an on-sheet explanatory check, although it does not give any more certainty than =ISREF(A7) itself. [Z-MAIN] [Z-IF]
Distinguish reference validity from text-to-reference conversion
A frequent mistake is storing A7 in B2 and expecting =ISREF(B2) to report whether the text stored in B2 is an acceptable address. It tests the expression B2, which is itself a cell reference. It does not inspect whether the content spells another reference. Quoting changes the expression’s type: "A7" is text rather than a reference. This is the central distinction to teach during spreadsheet migrations. [Z-MAIN]
Zoho separately documents INDIRECT to obtain a cell reference from a text string and evaluate the referenced cell’s content. However, that article says the function finally returns the cell value. We therefore do not claim that =ISREF(INDIRECT("A7")) necessarily returns TRUE: whether reference identity survives that nested evaluation is an unverified native-execution question, not established by combining the two prose descriptions. Use INDIRECT to retrieve a value when appropriate and test the actual expression before publishing a general “reference validation” recipe. [Z-INDIRECT]
For a text-address field, define an error-tolerant retrieval policy independently of ISREF. For example, Zoho documents IFERROR(value;value_if_error) and its relevant error categories, but the most useful fallback value depends on your business rules. A plausible untested prototype is =IFERROR(INDIRECT(B2);"Check address"); do not substitute this for a proven ISREF check or assert its behaviour for every invalid string. [Z-IFERROR] [Z-INDIRECT]
What ISREF does not establish
It does not establish that referenced cells contain nonblank data, that an external source is connected, that the contents have the expected type, or that a workbook will survive an export/import cycle. Those are different audits. A reference can be valid even when its value is missing. If you need the presence of a formula rather than the kind of an expression, use ISFORMULA; if you need the type of a value, consult TYPE. [Z-MAIN] [Z-ISFORMULA] [Z-TYPE]
The official article does not enumerate dynamic arrays, cross-workbook references, every named-expression type, spilled ranges, names that resolve to constants, or blank/invalid reference edge cases. The documented rule about defined names should not be generalized to every possible named expression. If a workbook uses these features, create a minimal case and record native results separately.
Troubleshooting named ranges and invalid addresses
Unexpected #NAME!: Check the workbook’s name definitions, spelling, naming conflicts and missing quotation marks for literal text. A valid named range must be defined before using the official Range example. The generic Zoho error explanation mentions undefined names, but no undocumented automatic recovery is implied. [Z-MAIN]
Unexpected #REF!: Check whether a source reference was deleted or moved, or whether a text-to-reference operation has an invalid address. Do not assume ISREF will catch and replace such errors; isolate the argument formula first. [Z-MAIN]
Unexpected FALSE for a name: Confirm that the bare name refers to a cell or range and is accessible in the current workbook. Copying a formula without its range definition does not recreate that definition.
Unexpected TRUE for B2 holding a text address: You are passing B2, the reference to the input cell. Try the separately documented literal =ISREF(1) and text =ISREF("A7") controls and distinguish expression identity from contents.
FAQ
Is =ISREF("A7") the same as =ISREF(A7)? No. Quoted characters are text; the bare cell notation is the actual reference. The official A7 TRUE example and reference definition support this distinction; the quoted-text result remains independently inferred pending native confirmation. [Z-MAIN]
Can I test a defined name? Yes, provided it refers to a range; Zoho gives =ISREF(Range) → TRUE as an official example after the name exists. [Z-MAIN]
Will ISREF repair a broken workbook? No. It checks an expression. It does not recreate deleted ranges, rewrite names or convert stored address strings.
Scope, version, locale and verification
This is a Zoho Sheet guide based on the English-language, public Zoho Sheet Help documentation checked 13 October 2026. The official function article establishes that the function is documented; it does not give a first-supported release number, promise behaviour on every mobile/offline client, or state that a particular paid account tier is required. Accordingly, this guide does not assign an invented first-supported version or subscription requirement. Zoho describes Sheet as a cloud spreadsheet product; native desktop/mobile and imported-file behaviour require their own tests rather than assumptions. See the Zoho Sheet product/limits guide for product context. [Z-PRODUCT]
Examples use the English function names as printed in the English Help articles. One-argument syntax has no argument separator; any multi-argument companion examples here follow Zoho’s documented semicolon format. Workbook locale can affect numeric punctuation and regional formatting: confirm your setting in File → Spreadsheet Settings → Locale, especially before copying examples between workbooks. Localized function names, decimal parsing and translated names have not been independently tested. [Z-LOCALE]
Verification disclosure: Official examples are labelled as such; additional results come from independent Boolean/type or integer calculations consistent with the public definitions. We did not open an authenticated Zoho Sheet spreadsheet, run native formulas, capture screenshots, or verify mobile/desktop edition equivalence. Do not turn the expected-result tables into claims of native execution. Test unusual inputs in your own workbook before relying on their runtime behavior.
How to reproduce and audit results
- Open a blank worksheet in Zoho Sheet. Use the cell references in the worked example and type ordinary values in their prescribed data cells; for a text representation of
TRUE, use a text-producing formula such as="TRUE"instead of allowing automatic Boolean conversion. - Enter each formula into a fresh result cell, keeping the leading
=. For literal text outputs, preserve straight quotation marks. Paste a formula into the grid rather than the search box. - Compare the result with the expected column, checking the independent/official evidence label. If it differs, note account/edition, locale, exact formula, actual value and any error before diagnosing a product bug.
- Save a separate copy of the practice worksheet if you need to experiment. The example tables are reference setups, not captured Zoho execution traces.
Errors and troubleshooting framework
Zoho’s function Help pages include a general error glossary, not a proven mapping from each example in this guide to a specific error. A #NAME! often suggests a misspelled function, unresolved defined name or improperly quoted text; #REF! points to invalid/deleted references; #VALUE! may signal an unacceptable argument type; #N/A! can originate from a lookup upstream. Those are diagnostic leads, not promises that a particular invalid input will always return that error. Follow the source expression first, then the wrapping test. [Z-MAIN]
If the function gives an unexpected TRUE/FALSE, inspect the difference between a literal value, a referenced cell, a text value that looks like a number/Boolean, and an actual logical result. Never silently coerce identifiers (leading-zero codes, dates or Boolean-labelled text) into another type. In a multi-user sheet, confirm that an imported column still has the same data type and that named ranges remain defined after copy/move. For unresolved edge cases, create a minimal one-cell reproduction and record the observed result rather than extrapolating from Excel.
Cross-platform and file-compatibility cautions
Microsoft’s Excel IS-functions reference documents superficially similar function names and examples, but Excel results are not a native Zoho Sheet test. Any statement here about Zoho is tied to a Zoho source; any Microsoft comparison is explicitly attributed to Microsoft. Formula imports and exports may have different capabilities. Zoho maintains a separate unsupported export features list; absence of a function from that list does not certify perfect formula interchange. Check exported files and recalculated results in the target application before using them for compliance, finance or operational decisions. [M-IS] [Z-EXPORT]
