Zoho Sheet ISTEXT: Identify Text Values and Validate Imported Data
Learn the Zoho Sheet ISTEXT function with typed-cell tests, data-validation formulas, text-versus-number examples, and documented limits.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in Zoho Sheet. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: =ISTEXT(A2) is the one-argument test to use when you want TRUE for text content and FALSE for other content. Zoho describes ISTEXT as testing whether a supplied value is, or refers to, text. The function is especially helpful after CSV imports, when an apparently numeric identifier might actually be text. It does not automatically convert or clean the input. [Z-ISTEXT]
Verification disclosure: Zoho’s public reference was checked October 13, 2026. Examples and predicted TRUE/FALSE flags here are independent applications of the documented rule to explicitly typed worksheet inputs. No example was run inside a signed-in Zoho Sheet account, and these flags are not screenshots or native-app validation.
Official syntax and argument types
ISTEXT(value)
| Position | Argument | Required? | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | value |
Yes | Value or a cell reference whose evaluated content you want to classify | A2 or "Zoho" |
There is one required argument, with no documented optional arguments or defaults. The official Zoho Help reference illustrates =ISTEXT("Zoho") returning TRUE. It also illustrates cell references A3 and A4 returning FALSE, but does not show the underlying input values in the accessible HTML; do not infer those inputs from the result labels. [Z-ISTEXT]
Unlike arithmetic or string conversion functions, ISTEXT is a type check: it is not designed to ask whether a number looks like words in the current cell format, or whether an imported string could be parsed as a number. Text containing numeric characters remains a text input for the purpose of a type audit. The boundary cases below are proposed reader checks, not independently observed Zoho engine behavior. [Z-ISTEXT, Z-TYPE]
Set up a reproducible input table
Open a new blank workbook in Zoho Sheet. In A1 enter Value; in B1 enter ISTEXT result; in C1 enter Why. Type the following entries into column A, taking care to preserve each entry’s type. Put your test formula in B2, then fill it through B9. The apostrophe shown for A4 is an entry prefix that forces text; the apostrophe is not intended as a visible character in the cell.
| Cell | What to enter in A | Intended type / display | Documentation-based expected =ISTEXT(Arow) |
Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A2 | Paid |
Text | TRUE | Ordinary words |
| A3 | 125 |
Number | FALSE | Numeric quantity |
| A4 | '00125 |
Text displaying 00125 |
TRUE | Zero-padded identifier, not a quantity |
| A5 | ="Done" |
Formula whose result is text | TRUE | The resulting value is text |
| A6 | =2+3 |
Formula whose result is number 5 | FALSE | Formula existence alone does not make text |
| A7 | TRUE |
Actual logical value, not quoted text | FALSE | Boolean is a separate type |
| A8 | "TRUE" as literal text (enter 'TRUE) |
Text | TRUE | Same visible word, different type |
| A9 | East Warehouse |
Text | TRUE | Includes a space, still text |
Important typing distinction: If a cell appears to contain TRUE, verify whether it is the Boolean TRUE or text "TRUE". Similarly, entering 00125 without forcing text may remove its leading zeros before ISTEXT ever sees it. Manual entry is recommended for this exercise because a CSV importer may infer column types; a CSV file alone cannot prove that A4 was stored as text. [Z-ISTEXT, Z-TYPE]
Enter this in B2 and fill down to B9:
=ISTEXT(A2)
The expected B2:B9 sequence is TRUE, FALSE, TRUE, TRUE, FALSE, FALSE, TRUE, TRUE, assuming the cell types in the table are preserved. That sequence was independently checked against the simple type classification defined above, not against a live Zoho worksheet.
A direct official baseline check needs no input table:
=ISTEXT("Zoho")
Zoho’s documented result: TRUE. [Z-ISTEXT]
More useful formulas than a bare TRUE/FALSE
Label text-based order statuses
Suppose A2 contains the word Paid, and an imported column sometimes contains numeric status codes. In B2 use:
=IF(ISTEXT(A2);"Text status";"Check type")
Expected B2: Text status, from the documented ISTEXT condition plus Zoho’s documented three-argument IF(test; value1; value2) syntax. If A3 holds the numeric value 125, the same formula adjusted to A3 is expected to return Check type. This is a classification, not proof the status is an authorized word: Pending, P@id, and even a text identifier all pass ISTEXT. Combine a type gate with a separate permitted-values check if exact status vocabulary matters. [Z-ISTEXT, Z-IF]
Avoid applying text length logic to unrelated cell types
An audit formula can label the length of text only after a type check:
=IF(ISTEXT(A2);LEN(A2);"not text")
If A2 contains Paid, independent expected output: 4. If A3 is numeric 125, the expected output is the text not text. The example deliberately separates type from length; it does not presume the way every non-text value would be coerced by LEN. Zoho documents the IF branch order, and its function catalogue includes LEN. Verify the additional function in the intended application before treating this as native confirmation. [Z-ISTEXT, Z-IF, Z-LEN]
Preserve identifiers instead of silently converting them
A warehouse product ID such as 00125 should usually remain text if the leading zeros are meaningful. ISTEXT(A4) is a fast first diagnostic: it can tell you whether you still have a text value. It does not restore a lost leading zero, validate length, or detect duplicate IDs. A sensible two-stage check is (1) inspect storage type and (2) separately verify length/format with a dedicated validation rule. [Z-ISTEXT]
Triage a mixed imported column
If the third-party CSV contains quantities alongside free-text notes, add ISTEXT as a parallel diagnostic column before changing any values. Sort or filter on the diagnostic flags only after checking that your sheet supports the selected filtering workflow and that type inference did not already damage source data. Keep original data in a separate untouched sheet. ISTEXT should not be presented as a substitute for a data-import specification or a cleanup backup.
Subtle cases that require a native-app check
Visibly empty versus truly blank: A cell may be genuinely empty, or may contain a formula such as ="" that evaluates to a zero-length text string. Zoho’s short ISTEXT article does not explicitly document this pair. Do not claim a tested result for either case from the main example table. Verify both on the actual product version before relying on the distinction; use ISBLANK to test the separate concept of a blank cell, and ISFORMULA to test formula presence. [Z-ISTEXT, Z-ISBLANK, Z-ISFORMULA]
Errors: The documentation’s common error table is broad; it does not specify whether ISTEXT(NA()) produces FALSE or an error in every evaluation context. Do not hide failures without deciding whether an error should be flagged distinctly. Use ISERROR as a separate diagnostic, then build an explicit error branch if needed. The error-related behavior of complex nested formulas remains native-test pending. [Z-ISTEXT, Z-ISERROR]
Formatted numerics and dates: Changing number formatting is not the same operation as storing a text string. The help page does not prove all import-path and locale outcomes. Do not assume a currency symbol in a number-formatted cell makes the underlying type text; check the result in the particular workbook. [Z-ISTEXT, Z-LOCALE]
Arrays, ranges and references: Zoho’s description permits values and references but its ISTEXT page does not enumerate spill behavior or how an entire multi-cell range is evaluated. The worked examples use one cell at a time, intentionally avoiding undocumented array semantics. [Z-ISTEXT]
Troubleshooting: likely causes and the next test
| Symptom | Check | Suggested correction |
|---|---|---|
FALSE for something that looks like an ID |
Is it stored as number rather than text? | Restore ID from source text; preserve leading zeros on import |
TRUE for numeric-looking digits |
Are the digits quoted or prefixed with an apostrophe? | Decide if identifier or numeric quantity; do not convert automatically |
#NAME! |
Spelling of ISTEXT, quotation marks, or invalid defined names |
Re-enter =ISTEXT("Zoho") as a baseline; use official syntax [Z-ISTEXT] |
#REF! |
Deleted/moved source reference | Repair the broken reference before attempting classification [Z-ISTEXT] |
#VALUE! |
Unexpected argument/type in a larger formula | Reduce to =ISTEXT(A2) and re-add surrounding logic one step at a time [Z-ISTEXT] |
| Blank-looking cell produces unexpected result | Distinguish empty cell, empty text string, and formula | Reproduce the pair and record results for this Zoho version |
| Formula seems to classify itself | Are you testing ISFORMULA rather than ISTEXT? |
Test the result type with ISTEXT; test formula presence with ISFORMULA |
The error codes above are Zoho’s published general troubleshooting categories, not a claim that each particular input generates that code in ISTEXT. [Z-ISTEXT]
Compatibility and edition scope
The scope of this article is the current public English Zoho Sheet Help entry, consulted October 13, 2026. The article does not provide a first-supported build number, rollout date, minimum account tier, or per-platform execution matrix. Therefore none is asserted. Zoho markets web, iOS and Android spreadsheet experiences, but that is not a native formula test on those clients. [Z-ISTEXT, Z-MOBILE]
Zoho documents workbook-level locale settings affecting number/date formats and separators. Examples in this guide use the semicolon style in Zoho’s English IF documentation. ISTEXT itself accepts only one argument, so no argument separator is needed inside its parentheses. Validate localized punctuation and imported type conversion in the target workbook. [Z-LOCALE, Z-IF]
Excel comparison is documentation-only: Microsoft’s IS-functions guidance also describes ISTEXT as testing for text and gives similar one-argument syntax. It does not prove Zoho has identical handling of blank formulas, array references, or errors. More importantly, Zoho’s ISNUMBER description explicitly includes logical values, while Microsoft’s ISNUMBER row refers to numbers, so do not assume identical behavior across the entire IS-family.
