Zoho Sheet NOW: current date and time in a formula

Quick answer: =NOW() inserts the current date and time according to the spreadsheet calculation environment. Zoho’s official NOW article says the time value updates on recalculation. Because that result moves with time, this guide separates illustrative assumed clocks from actual Zoho Sheet measurements.

Exact official syntax and parameters

=NOW()

NOW requires no arguments. The current Zoho reference presents the function as date and time, with a past sample timestamp; that sample is not a fixed return value. Format the cell as Date/Time to display both parts. Excel uses numeric date/time serial representation, but this article is not evidence that every Zoho platform shares every Excel serial, timezone or daylight-saving behavior.

Practice data: fixed events and an explicit hypothetical clock

Create a new sheet named LiveClock. Enter the following examples as actual date-time values, not quoted text strings; apply a date/time cell format. To check numeric calculations without a real clock, take a hypothetical NOW value of 2026-10-11 14:30:00 in your spreadsheet’s chosen time zone.

Row A: Event B: Timestamp Expected elapsed hours at hypothetical 2026-10-11 14:30
2 Morning receipt 2026-10-11 09:30:00 5.00
3 Noon scan 2026-10-11 12:00:00 2.50
4 Afternoon pickup 2026-10-11 14:00:00 0.50
5 Next pickup 2026-10-11 15:00:00 -0.50
6 Yesterday close 2026-10-10 17:30:00 21.00
7 Two days ago 2026-10-09 14:30:00 48.00

The attached practice CSV is for dates and month offsets; this secondary LiveClock test table can be entered manually. Its expected values were calculated independently with Python and are not live clock output from Zoho.

Formulas and expected outcomes

  1. In D1, type =NOW() and apply a date-and-time format. The displayed value depends on recalculation time. It is not necessarily the hypothetical time used below.
  2. In C2, enter =(NOW()-B2)*24 and format as a number with two decimals. For B2 = 2026-10-11 09:30:00, if NOW is exactly 2026-10-11 14:30:00, the expected elapsed time is 5.00 hours. Fill down to row 7; the expected values under that assumption are 5.00, 2.50, 0.50, -0.50, 21.00, 48.00.
  3. To compare only calendar dates: =DAYS(TODAY();DATE(2026;10;10)). On October 11, 2026, this gives 1 calendar day even if fewer than 24 hours have passed. Use NOW differences to measure fractional-day elapsed time.
  4. For a full-hour component of the current time, use =HOUR(NOW()). If the hypothetical clock is 14:30:00, its expected result is 14; at 15:00 it changes to 15 once recalculated.
  5. For 90 minutes from now, try =NOW()+TIME(1;30;0). If NOW is 2026-10-11 14:30:00, its expected date-time is 2026-10-11 16:00:00. Zoho TIME arithmetic with NOW still requires native acceptance testing.
  6. For a conditional label use =IF(NOW()>B5;"Past pickup";"Pickup pending"). With B5 = 2026-10-11 15:00:00 and the hypothetical time 14:30, the result is Pickup pending.

For a reproducible test that does not use the clock, replace NOW() in arithmetic with DATE(2026;10;11)+TIME(14;30;0); the mathematical expectations above can then be checked using fixed inputs. Actual cell input types and date arithmetic behavior must still be verified in Zoho.

Advanced application: live order-age dashboard

Suppose column B contains a true captured event timestamp. Create a severity indicator:

=IF((NOW()-B2)*24>24;"Over 24 hours";"Within 24 hours")

At hypothetical 2026-10-11 14:30, the yesterday-close example B6=2026-10-10 17:30 is Within 24 hours (21 hours), while B7=2026-10-09 14:30 is Over 24 hours (48 hours). Decide how to treat future timestamps: a negative age is not an error by itself; it may mean a scheduled future event or a time-zone/data error.

Critical audit caution: =NOW() is not a permanent timestamp of when a row was created. When the workbook recalculates, the formula updates. For regulatory or sales logs, store an actual event record rather than a volatile formula value.

Troubleshooting and time-zone edge cases

Symptom Possible cause What to do
Only date appears Cell is formatted as date only Apply a date-time format showing hours/minutes.
Only numeric fractional value appears Serial/time format Format as Date/Time; don’t misinterpret raw numeric encoding.
Formula doesn’t update every second Zoho says NOW changes on recalculation, not necessarily each second Inspect calculation settings and client-specific behavior.
Elapsed hours wrong by 1 near DST change Offset and daylight-saving interpretation matters Record source time zone; test the exact DST transition in native Zoho.
Two collaborators see different clock times Workbook/user locale/display settings or recalculation timing Compare workbook zone and calculated value, not display alone.
Future appointment gives negative elapsed duration NOW() is before event timestamp Treat scheduled future times separately; validate stored timezone.
#VALUE! Imported timestamp is text, not a true date-time Construct test with DATE(...)+TIME(...); check parsing.
#NAME! Misspelling or missing parentheses Use =NOW() and check editor suggestions.

NOW versus TODAY, Excel, availability

Zoho TODAY returns a date, whereas NOW returns a date and time. Microsoft Excel NOW also describes a no-argument recalculating date-time function. That resemblance does not prove Zoho’s recalculation triggers, clock source, time zone or offline mode matches Excel. Google Sheets has time functions with their own settings; this guide does not assert native parity without a direct Google support check.

Availability, Excel and Google Sheets considerations

Zoho’s current public help lists this function, but does not provide its original release date or a comprehensive feature matrix for web, mobile, and older clients. As of 2026-10-11, the Zoho September 2026 update says the Windows/macOS beta desktop apps use Excel-native formula syntax by default for offline files. Consequently, check the editor’s suggestions for argument separator and import interpretation before copying formulas verbatim. A comma is commonly used in Microsoft Excel examples; this page uses Zoho help’s semicolons. Formula names matching other apps do not establish feature-identical versions.

For date display and parsing, see Zoho Spreadsheet locale and calculation settings: File → Spreadsheet Settings → Locale offers date format, time zone and separators. Use DATE(2024;1;31) rather than ambiguous text such as "1/31/24" in portable examples. Some serial-number displays or historical-date conventions may differ between applications; this is not a verified cross-application cell-level comparison.
