TEXTSPLIT Function in Zoho Sheet: Syntax, Examples and Troubleshooting
Split text into columns and rows in Zoho Sheet with documented empty-field defaults, case matching, multiple delimiters and fill values.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: Put red-green-blue in A2, then enter =TEXTSPLIT(A2;"-") in C2. The expected output is red, green, blue across C2:E2. Zoho documents ignore_empty=TRUE by default, so repeated delimiters do not preserve an empty field unless you explicitly choose FALSE.
Availability and version history
- Introduced: Added in March 2023, according to Zoho’s release history; no numbered cloud release is given.
- Availability: Currently documented in Zoho Sheet’s rolling web-service help; no retirement or final supported release is identified in the checked sources.
- Scope: The web documentation establishes these options; mobile and imported-workbook behavior are not separately certified here.
- Checked: October 14, 2026, using the official TEXTSPLIT reference, with independent string-result checks. No native Zoho Sheet test.
Syntax and all six arguments
=TEXTSPLIT(text; col_delimiter; [row_delimiter]; [ignore_empty]; [mode]; [fill_with])
| Argument | Purpose | Required or default |
|---|---|---|
text |
Text to divide | Required |
col_delimiter |
Boundary that creates adjacent columns | Required in the displayed signature |
row_delimiter |
Boundary that creates rows below | Optional |
ignore_empty |
TRUE skips empty fields; FALSE preserves them | Default TRUE |
mode |
0 matches letter case; 1 ignores case | Default 0 |
fill_with |
Value used to pad missing positions in a rectangular result | Default not-found error, shown as #N/A |
The official TEXTSPLIT page documents these defaults and accepts an array of delimiters. Do not type the square brackets. A skipped optional position still needs its separator when a later argument is present; for example, =TEXTSPLIT(A6;":";;FALSE) omits the row delimiter but sets ignore_empty explicitly.
Enter the results as dynamic arrays
Zoho’s dynamic-array announcement explains that you enter the formula in one cell and its result extends into adjacent cells. You do not need Ctrl+Shift+Enter for that dynamic-array behavior. Leave each stated result area empty; put the formula only in its top-left cell, rather than copying it into all output cells.
Use a blank worksheet for the following examples. Column A contains source text, and columns C:E are reserved for outputs. Each example has its own rows so results do not collide.
Reproducible cases
1. Ordinary horizontal splitting
Put red-green-blue in A2. Enter =TEXTSPLIT(A2;"-") in C2. Expect C2=red, D2=green, E2=blue. The hyphens are boundaries and are not included in the returned fragments.
2. Repeated delimiters with the default
Put A::B in A4. Enter =TEXTSPLIT(A4;":") in C4. Expect C4=A, D4=B, because Zoho’s default ignores the empty field between the two colons.
3. Preserve an empty field
Put the same A::B in A6. Enter =TEXTSPLIT(A6;":";;FALSE) in C6. Expect C6=A, D6=an empty field, E6=B. D6 is part of the returned array, even though it looks blank. This option matters when the middle field carries meaning in a fixed-column schema.
4. Split rows and columns together
Put R1A,R1B;R2A,R2B in A8. Enter =TEXTSPLIT(A8;",";";") in C8, keeping C8:D9 empty beforehand. Expect:
| Row | C | D |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | R1A | R1B |
| 9 | R2A | R2B |
The semicolon inside quotes is a row delimiter in the input data. Semicolons outside quotes separate the function arguments.
5. Pad an uneven row
Put R1A,R1B;R2A in A12. Enter =TEXTSPLIT(A12;",";";";TRUE;0;"-") in C12, with C12:D13 free. Expect R1A, R1B in row 12 and R2A, - in row 13. The dash is padding for the missing second item in that row; it is not a literal field present in the source.
6. Choose case sensitivity explicitly
Put AendBENDC in A16, then =TEXTSPLIT(A16;"END";;TRUE;1) in C16. Expect A, B, C across C16:E16. Copy the same source text into A18, and enter =TEXTSPLIT(A18;"END";;TRUE;0) in C18. Expect AendB, C across C18:D18; the lowercase end did not match the case-sensitive uppercase delimiter.
7. Supply multiple delimiters
Put A-B,C in A20. Enter =TEXTSPLIT(A20;{"-";","}) in C20. Expect A, B, C across C20:E20. The braces form the delimiter array shown by Zoho’s official syntax examples. These inputs use distinct, non-overlapping delimiters; priority between overlapping delimiter strings is not established here.
Advanced example: distinguish a blank field from a missing field
Put A,,10;B,ok,20;C,ok in A24. Reserve C24:E26 for the result and enter this formula only in C24:
=TEXTSPLIT(A24;",";";";FALSE;0;"MISSING")
Expected layout:
| Row | C: Code | D: Status | E: Quantity text |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 | A | empty field | 10 |
| 25 | B | ok | 20 |
| 26 | C | ok | MISSING |
The first record contains an explicit empty middle field between consecutive commas. The last record has only two items, so its third position is padding. Keeping these situations distinct can prevent a quantity from shifting into a status column. Confirm whether the quantity fragments are stored as text or numbers, and perform any required conversion before totaling that field.
The data are deliberately simple delimited text. Do not assume TEXTSPLIT provides a complete CSV importer with quoted-field escaping, or automatically understands a source schema.
Troubleshooting and choosing the right tool
- A result is blocked: the dynamic-array documentation identifies
#SPILL!when existing content obstructs the output range. Inspect the occupied cells before clearing or moving anything valuable. - Fields shifted left: check ignore_empty. FALSE preserves interior empty fields; the default TRUE removes them.
- Unexpected not-found values in shorter rows: use fill_with when padding needs a visible marker. Zoho’s page uses both
#N/Aand#N/A!spellings; exact on-screen error text was not observed here. - Spaces remain: a split separates text but is not a cleanup policy. Apply TRIM where whitespace normalization is appropriate.
- Only one boundary is needed: TEXTAFTER or TEXTBEFORE extracts a single side instead of producing a multi-cell result.
- Need to reassemble fragments: TEXTJOIN joins values with a chosen delimiter. Restoring a delimiter does not restore empty fields that were already discarded.
The expected layouts were checked with an independent string model. Blank/empty delimiter behavior, overlapping delimiters and range-wide broadcasting of multiple input cells are outside these examples; the official page’s multi-cell remark does not fully describe every resulting shape.
