Build and Check a Scatter Chart in Zoho Sheet
Create a scatter chart with numeric X and Y values, verify unequal spacing, and check the source after changing or adding an observation.
Quick answer
Create a scatter chart with numeric X and Y values, verify unequal spacing, and check the source after changing or adding an observation.
Before you start
Zoho Sheet web editor in an English desktop browser; rolling service, official documentation reviewed 20 October 2026. Not desktop-app or mobile instructions. Use an editable practice file containing only synthetic data. Keep the original unchanged and record the file name and storage location so that you reopen the same copy. These are documentation-based instructions and independently checked examples, not a claim of native application testing.
Choose the question before the chart
Two measures on the same worksheet do not necessarily belong on the same category chart. A scatter chart answers whether pairs of numeric observations vary together. A combination chart can compare different measures across a shared category, but different axes make visual comparisons easy to misread.
Enter A1:B5 as Hours and Output, with pairs (1, 5), (2, 9), (4, 16), and (8, 25). These are four synthetic observations, not a continuous time series. Their unequal X gaps make a useful test: the gap from 4 to 8 must be twice the gap from 2 to 4 on a linear numeric axis.
Create and check the relationship view
- Select A1:B5 and choose Insert → Chart. Choose the scatter type rather than a line chart with equally spaced categories.
- Inspect the chart’s source and numeric roles. Hours must be the X values and Output the Y values, with exactly four plotted observations.
- The current documented editor has Data, Design and Format tabs. Use Data to check the range, Design to enable titles and labels, and Format to adjust the chosen elements. Older Zoho help describes Customize and General tabs; those are not extra tabs to look for in the newer interface.
- Label the chart
Output versus hours, with axis titlesHoursandOutput units. Do not add a trendline as proof of a causal relationship. - Check all four coordinates, especially (8, 25). Change B5 to 30 and verify only that observation moves vertically; its X coordinate must remain 8.
A chart that places 1, 2, 4 and 8 at equal gaps is not displaying the intended numeric relationship. Correct the chart type or roles instead of interpreting its slope. Keep the original numeric table visible for readers who need precise values.
Distinguish relationships from mixed-unit trends
A scatter chart needs paired observations: each row supplies one X and one Y. Do not sort Hours independently from Output or the pairs become meaningless. If you sort, select the complete two-column dataset and preserve the header row. Recheck that (1, 5), (2, 9), (4, 16) and the edited (8, 30) remain together.
A combination chart answers a different question, such as units and defect rate by month. Separate axes can make unrelated measures appear closely matched. This guide does not configure combination or secondary-axis charts; use clearly labelled separate views when you cannot verify the units and axes.
Challenge the result and preserve the evidence
Add a fifth observation, Hours 3 and Output 11, in A6:B6. Extend the chart’s Data range to include row 6 once, without retaining an overlapping duplicate source range. Expect five points, with the new point between X=2 and X=4. If the chart still shows four, inspect the source address rather than assuming it grows automatically.
Remove the test row from the source and restore the original four-row chart range. Set B5 back to 25 if you want the initial fixture. The positive association is descriptive only: four constructed observations do not establish causation or support extrapolating production beyond the measured hours.
Reopen the workbook and inspect the source and coordinates. Keep the table beside the chart so the exact pairs remain readable. An image export is a static snapshot; after changing source data, export again and inspect the new file rather than assuming an existing image updates.
