Quick answer

Use Go to cell, deliberate range selection and F2 editing to change the intended cells without replacing a formula accidentally.

Before you start

Zoho Sheet web editor in an English desktop browser; rolling service, official documentation reviewed 20 October 2026. Not desktop-app or mobile instructions. Use an editable practice file containing only synthetic data. Keep the original unchanged and record the file name and storage location so that you reopen the same copy. These are documentation-based instructions and independently checked examples, not a claim of native application testing.

Build a small navigation exercise

Enter Item, Units, and Unit cost in A1:C1, and Line total in D1. Enter Notebook, 3, 4 in row 2; Folder, 5, 2 in row 3; and Pen, 2, 6 in row 4. Put =B2*C2 in D2, =B3*C3 in D3 and =B4*C4 in D4. The line totals should be 12, 10 and 12. Put =SUM(D2:D4) in D6; the check total is 34. Leave row 5 empty deliberately.

The empty row is important: navigation by data region is not the same as selecting a fixed address. In real files, blank cells can interrupt a keyboard jump. Decide whether you need a rectangular range or the current contiguous region before applying a change.

Move, select, then edit

  1. Click inside the grid so the browser address bar is not active. Press Ctrl+G on Windows or Cmd+G on macOS to open Zoho Sheet’s Go to cell command. Use it to reach D6 and confirm the total.
  2. Return to B2. Press Tab to move to C2, then Shift+Tab to return. These moves are useful when entering one record across several columns.
  3. To select A1:D4 precisely, click A1 and drag to D4. For a keyboard-only rectangular selection, start at A1 and extend using Shift plus arrow keys. Inspect the highlighted border before formatting or pasting.
  4. Select C2 and press F2 to edit the active cell. Change 4 to 5 and commit the edit. D2 should become 15 and D6 should become 37.
  5. Select D2 and inspect its formula before typing. Press F2, start an unwanted edit, then press Esc before committing it. Confirm that =B2*C2 remains intact.
  6. If you have already committed a mistaken replacement, use Ctrl+Z on Windows or Cmd+Z on macOS immediately. Confirm the formula, not only the displayed number, has returned.

Choose the right selection

A whole-row selection is not interchangeable with A2:D2: formatting or deleting an entire row affects cells beyond the visible table. Likewise, selecting all data is risky when notes or calculations sit elsewhere on the sheet. Use the explicit rectangle for this exercise and leave D6 outside it.

For a long workbook, practice the Go to cell command with a known address instead of repeatedly scrolling. Keep a short list of important addresses in a cover sheet, and check the active cell before entering data. Navigation is successful only when the destination is correct, not merely when the screen moves.

If a shortcut behaves unexpectedly

Function keys may require your keyboard’s Fn modifier. A browser or operating system can intercept a shortcut; use the visible grid controls rather than repeatedly sending it. Zoho documents browser-shortcut overrides, so the same key combination can have different effects depending on focus and preferences. Do not change those preferences mid-edit.

Reopen the practice file and check C2 is 5, D2 still contains a formula, and D6 is 37. This distinguishes a saved formula-driven change from a visually plausible but hard-coded result.

Continue with freeze panes navigation.
