HDATE_YEAR Function (Gnumeric)
Convert Gregorian date components to Hebrew calendar years in Gnumeric with HDATE_YEAR, new-year boundaries and explicit date inputs.
Verification status: Gnumeric 1.12.57 ssconvert bounded HDATE-YEAR fixtures only; retained 1.12.62 source inspected separately; no GUI. How formula examples are checked
HDATE_YEAR converts a Gregorian calendar date into its Hebrew-calendar year number. It returns a numeric year such as 5785. The Gregorian year alone is not enough to determine that result because the Hebrew year changes during the Gregorian year.
Syntax and defaults
=HDATE_YEAR([year[,month[,day]]])
Arguments are Gregorian year, Gregorian month and Gregorian day. Each omitted component defaults to that component of the computer’s current local civil date. Supplying all three integers gives a reproducible conversion. A zero-argument call uses the current date; it is not a fixed constant suitable for an archived report.
The first argument is a year component, not a spreadsheet date serial. To convert a date stored in A1, use =HDATE_YEAR(YEAR(A1),MONTH(A1),DAY(A1)). The source date can remain visibly formatted as a date while the function result uses an ordinary integer format.
No location or time-of-day is supplied. The conversion does not determine sunset boundaries. Choose the appropriate civil date for the intended event before converting; a timestamp near sunset needs more context than this function accepts.
Worked example: a new-year boundary
=HDATE_YEAR(2001,3,30) returns 5761. An independent calendar reference identifies that date as 6 Nisan 5761.
Compare two adjacent Gregorian dates:
| Formula | Expected Hebrew year |
|---|---|
=HDATE_YEAR(2024,10,2) |
5784 |
=HDATE_YEAR(2024,10,3) |
5785 |
The second date is 1 Tishrei 5785. This pair demonstrates why simply adding a fixed offset to the Gregorian year is not a general conversion rule: both dates occur in Gregorian 2024 but belong to different Hebrew years.
A year number is not a complete date. It cannot by itself distinguish months, days or the order of events within the year. Keep the original Gregorian date or a complete converted date representation alongside it.
Advanced use: a stable reporting-year helper
Put =DATE(2024,10,2) in A1 and =DATE(2024,10,3) in A2. Enter =HDATE_YEAR(YEAR(A1),MONTH(A1),DAY(A1)) in B1 and copy down. The expected results are 5784 and 5785. Column B can serve as a grouping key for an annual report, while column A supplies the full chronology.
Use explicit source dates for an archived report rather than formulas that omit components and depend on the current computer date. If a report needs “current Hebrew year,” label that live field clearly and do not mix it with historical event-year values accidentally.
Grouping by the converted year is not an elapsed-years or age calculation. Two events in different Hebrew years can be one day apart at a boundary, as this example shows. Define the desired interval rule separately when calculating anniversaries or durations.
Errors and practical cautions
- A month of 13 produced
#VALUE!in the bounded native fixture. Use Gregorian month numbers 1 through 12. - Omitted arguments and explicit zeros are different. A zero component does not mean “use today’s component.”
- The helper performs basic component checks; do not rely on it as a comprehensive validator of every impossible Gregorian date. Construct and validate dates deliberately.
- Partially specified calls can combine a historical year with today’s month and day. That may be intentional but is easy to misread as a fixed conversion.
- Format the result as a number, not as a spreadsheet date serial or a percentage.
- The function does not infer a religious day’s evening start from an event time or location. A civil-date assumption must be explicit where that distinction matters.
History and evidence
The official 1.9.15 NEWS entry records the Hebrew-calendar function group. This guide inspects the individual HDATE_YEAR callback in retained Gnumeric 1.12.62 source, while fixed calendar expectations were independently checked against Hebcal. Native results are separately scoped below; no all-release behavior or retirement date is inferred.

Native verification scope
On 17 October 2026, Gnumeric 1.12.57 ssconvert recalculated 4 bounded HDATE_YEAR fixture records in C.UTF-8. The recorded outputs matched the independent expectations described here. This is engine evidence, not GUI or screenshot evidence. Examples using composed helper formulas or affine transformations are mathematical checks unless separately recorded; other versions and untested boundaries remain outside this scope.
