Freeze Headings and Navigate Long Sheets in Gnumeric
Choose a visible freeze boundary in Gnumeric, verify rows and columns separately, and recover from an incorrect frozen view.
Documentation-backed procedure; independent fixture checks; native verification pending · Editorial standards
Freeze the labels that explain a sheet while leaving its working area scrollable. In Gnumeric, the selection and the currently visible area both matter; return to the upper-left corner before setting up this exercise.
Make a predictable navigation grid
In a new Sheet1, enter these headings in A1:D1: Record, Item, Region, Amount.
| Cell | Entry |
|---|---|
| A2 | 1 |
| A3 | =A2+1 |
| B2 | Order |
| C2 | North |
| D2 | =A2*10 |
Copy A3 into A4:A41. Copy B2 into B3:B41, C2 into C3:C41 and D2 into D3:D41. You now have 40 records. A41 should be 40 and D41 400. In F1 enter =SUM(D2:D41); the independent expected total is 8200, from 10 × (1 + … + 40).
Enter Far-right check in N1 and End marker in N41. The distant cells let you test horizontal navigation without creating a very wide real dataset. If all 41 rows fit on your display, reduce the window height until scrolling is necessary.
Freeze row 1 and column A
- Use Edit → Select → Goto cell to go to A1. Ensure row 1 and column A are visible.
- Click B2 so the selection is one visible cell, excluding A1.
- Choose View → Freeze Panes.
- Scroll down to records in the thirties. Row 1 should remain visible.
- Scroll horizontally toward column N. Column A should remain visible, with the row numbers still aligned with the corresponding records.
The menu reference says a visible selection excluding A1 freezes the area above and to its left. For this test, that boundary is precisely row 1 and column A.
Verify each boundary independently
Use Goto cell to select D41. Expect Amount 400 for Record 40, with the heading row still present. Then go to N41 and check the End marker. Horizontal scrolling must not turn record 40 into record 39 or detach the fixed labels from the scrolling rows.
Navigate back to A1. Remove the frozen view using the View menu’s freeze/unfreeze control. Its exact active-state label needs checking in the installed build. Scroll again: row 1 and column A should now leave the viewport normally. Do not continue until the view is unfrozen.
To freeze only the header row, return to A1 and select the whole row 1 using its row header, then invoke Freeze Panes. Test vertical and horizontal scrolling separately: row 1 stays, but column A must scroll normally. For column A only, unfreeze, return to A1, select the whole column A, freeze and repeat the two-direction check. This verifies two distinct views rather than assuming the B2 setting applies to every task.
Advanced case: a title block above the table
In a disposable copy, first unfreeze the view. Then select the whole original rows 1–3 by their row headers and choose Insert → Rows. This inserts three blank rows above the selection, moving the original headings to row 4. Enter Order review in A1. Return to the top-left view, make B5 the visible selection and freeze. The predicted fixed area is rows 1–4 and column A. This uses more screen space than freezing just the headings.
Do not scroll to row 4 first and expect earlier rows to remain accessible. Gnumeric’s manual warns that content above or left of the visible region can become inaccessible until unfreezing. It also documents a different fallback boundary if the selection is completely offscreen. Keep the intended boundary visible to avoid that fallback.
Change and recovery checks
Return to the original grid. Change D41 from its formula to 450. F1 should become 8250, regardless of whether panes are frozen. Restore D41 to =A41*10 and expect 8200. Freezing changes navigation, not the calculations.
Save a native .gnumeric copy with your preferred frozen view. Close and reopen it, then repeat both scroll tests. Record whether the view survives in your installed version; this lesson does not claim that persistence test has been run. Keep the workbook data and the viewing preference as separate acceptance checks.
Troubleshooting and related lessons
- Too many fixed rows: unfreeze, return to A1, select the intended boundary and retry.
- Earlier rows appear inaccessible: unfreeze before navigating back to the start.
- All data still fit on screen: make the window smaller; a stationary sheet is not proof that freezing works.
- Printed pages need repeated headings: on-screen freeze is not a print-title setting. See printing and PDF output.
- For the arithmetic control, see SUM.
Evidence
The selection rules and Goto cell path were checked against the Gnumeric 1.12 menu reference on 2026-10-19. The 8200/8250 checks were calculated independently. No native GUI, saved-view persistence or screenshot was verified for this article. The instructions above are a documented procedure and an explicit acceptance test, not a claim of observed scrolling behavior.
