Set Reversible Workspace Defaults in Gnumeric
Test Gnumeric's new-workbook sheet count and zoom defaults without confusing them with existing workbook contents, then recover a hidden toolbar and restore your settings.
Gnumeric 1.12.62 GTK source and manual reviewed; test expectations checked; native preferences and persistence untested ยท Editorial standards
Application defaults, worksheet contents and toolbar visibility are different kinds of state. A useful workspace test changes one setting at a time, creates a disposable new workbook to observe its effect, and restores the previous setting explicitly.
Scope: Gnumeric 1.12.62 GTK desktop source, English labels, plus the official 1.12 manual. No preferences dialog, native new-workbook test, restart-persistence check or screenshot was run here. The procedure is a source-supported acceptance test for your installation, not a claim of observed behavior on every build or operating system.
Keep a before record
Save any important workbook first and perform this exercise in a new, disposable practice workbook. Do not overwrite a real report to test defaults.
- Put Workspace practice in A1 and
=7*8in B1. The independent arithmetic check is 56. - Note this workbook’s current number of sheet tabs and current zoom. Call it workbook A in your notes; renaming or saving it is not required for the test.
- Open Edit โ Preferences, then Windows. Record the existing Default Number of Sheets and Default Zoom Factor exactly as displayed before changing either.
- Also note whether the toolbar you intend to test is currently visible. Change no screen pixel-pitch, clipboard, autosave or overwrite setting during this exercise.
The two defaults below use separate values from the present workbook’s sheet count and view. Record both instead of assuming they were identical initially.
Test a new-workbook sheet count
Set Default Number of Sheets to 2. In the reviewed source, the control accepts values from 1 to 64 and writes the configuration when its value changes. Close the preferences dialog, then use File โ New to create workbook B.
The source path for File โ New reads the configured sheet count when constructing the new workbook. The expected check is therefore two sheets in B. Count the tabs rather than inferring the result from the first sheet’s name.
Return to A. Its previous sheet count and B1’s 56 should still be intact. Changing a default is not a command to delete or insert sheets in A. If your result differs, record the exact build and stop before using the setting on important work; do not force the expected outcome by manually deleting tabs.
Test the zoom factor separately
Return to Edit โ Preferences โ Windows. Set Default Zoom Factor to 1.25. The reviewed control stores a factor, not the integer percentage 125: 1.25 ร 100 = 125%. Use your locale’s decimal notation if the input control requires it.
Create another new workbook, C, through File โ New. New sheet construction in the reviewed source reads this zoom preference. Check C’s initial sheet view for 125% and its sheet count for two, because you have not yet restored the previous count default.
The expected combined result is:
| Check | A: already open practice workbook | C: newly created workbook |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet count | Its previously recorded count | 2 |
| Initial new-sheet zoom from this test | Do not assume retroactive change | 125% |
| B1 practice calculation | 56 remains in A | Not copied from A |
Opening a saved workbook is not the same test as File โ New: a file may carry its own worksheet/view state. Nor does a default zoom promise any particular printed page size. Use a workbook’s current view or print settings for those separate tasks.
Recover a hidden toolbar
Return explicitly to workbook A, the workbook containing the practice label and calculation. For a reversible visibility test, use View โ Toolbars and toggle one currently visible toolbar off. Reopen the same submenu and toggle that named toolbar back on. The manual documents this recovery route; it avoids requiring you to right-click a toolbar that is no longer visible.
Do not confuse hiding a toolbar with removing the cell data or deleting an embedded object. Check that A1 still contains the practice label and B1 still evaluates to 56. No claim is made here that a particular toolbar arrangement is stored in the workbook or transferred to another person’s computer.
Restore the original defaults
Open Preferences again and restore the two original values from your before record. Close the dialog and use File โ New once more if you want to check the restored new-workbook behavior. Restore the toolbar to its original visibility as well.
Closing Preferences is not a rollback. The inspected numeric controls call their configuration setters on value changes, and the Close callback destroys the dialog rather than undoing those changes. Restore recorded values explicitly; do not rely on worksheet Undo to restore application preferences. This guide has not tested disk persistence after exiting or restarting Gnumeric.
Troubleshooting
- An existing workbook does not gain or lose sheets: that is the intended distinction. Use worksheet-management commands when you actually want to edit a workbook’s structure.
- The zoom field rejects 125: the documented source control uses a factor; enter 1.25 for this test, not 125.
- A saved workbook opens with a different view: repeat the test with File โ New before concluding the default failed.
- You forgot the original settings: do not guess that another person’s defaults match yours. Stop changing additional settings and recover your own before record or consult your installation’s documented defaults.
- Text or window sizes remain unsuitable: avoid changing pixel pitch casually. The manual warns that it is a fundamental display setting; ordinary view zoom and toolbar visibility are narrower controls.
