Apache OpenOffice Calc: Diagnose #VALUE and Error 519
What the code tells you
Code 519, documented as #VALUE, indicates that a value does not fit the calculation, including text where a numeric value is needed. It is not proof that every text-looking input is wrong. Official error mapping.
A controlled type-mismatch example
Enter the word pending in A1, numeric 3 in B1, and =A1*B1 in C1. The word is deliberately not a numeric string; this is a type-mismatch diagnostic example, not a request to interpret a localized number. The documented error category is 519.
Replace A1 with numeric 12. The expected result becomes 36. Next change B1 to 4: the expected result is 48. These independent arithmetic checks verify the intended calculation, not a specific installed application’s display.
Diagnose the input’s meaning
- A status word entered in an amount column: keep status in its own column and obtain the real quantity. Do not turn “pending” into zero unless zero is actually the business value.
- Imported numbers stored as text: inspect a small sample against the original file. Decimal separators, grouping characters and stray whitespace are different issues. Use the CSV import guide to choose an interpretation before bulk conversion.
- A formula that returns text: inspect the formula feeding the failing cell. A display label such as “not supplied” may be useful to readers but unsuitable as the next calculation’s operand.
- A function expecting another kind of argument: verify that function’s definition. A cell reference, range, text argument and number are not interchangeable, and other argument errors may have different codes.
Changing number formatting is not evidence that the stored data was converted. Test the repaired calculation with a known numeric input and verify a second result. Avoid global search-and-replace that removes punctuation from identifiers, dates or valid decimal values.
Do not conceal missing data
An error catcher returning an empty string may make a summary look tidy while leaving the underlying calculation incomplete. Keep an explicit missing-data count or status and inspect affected totals. A plausible grand total is not proof that every intended record was numeric and included.
For a failure that moves through several formulas, use dependency tracing. For another error family, consult the error index rather than assuming every formula problem is a text conversion issue.
The cited 4.1 manual prints #VALUE without an exclamation mark. Match code 519 and the surrounding formula context; this page does not assert how every localized build renders the label.
Scope and verification
The error mapping is documented in Apache OpenOffice 4.1 Calc Guide, Appendix C, published August 25, 2025, checked October 21, 2026. This is a documentation-based desktop guide, not a test of an installed release or a claim about every platform. The worked arithmetic was checked independently; the application steps and displayed errors have not been newly executed. Use a disposable workbook or a separately saved copy.
