SQRT Function in SoftMaker PlanMaker 2026: Formula, Examples & Troubleshooting
Learn the PlanMaker SQRT function, its exact syntax, examples, limits and Excel compatibility.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in SoftMaker PlanMaker 2026. How formula examples are checked
Calculate the nonnegative square root of a numeric value.
Verification: No native PlanMaker execution was performed. SoftMaker documentation was inspected on 2026-10-13. Numeric expected outputs below are vendor examples where marked or calculations made independently; they are not screenshots, measured PlanMaker executions or proof of exact runtime behavior.
Quick formula
=SQRT(Number)
Enter a formula with =. This function name and parameter order are taken from SoftMaker’s official 2026 reference.

Reproduce it in a worksheet
Set A1 to Side squared and B1 to Square root. Put 9, 16, and 25 into A2:A4. Type =SQRT(A2) in B2, then copy that formula down to B4. The expected results are 3, 4, and 5 respectively. When copied downward, the relative reference changes from A2 to A3 and then A4. These are independent mathematical expectations, not recorded results from a native PlanMaker session.
Why SQRT returns one root, not two
The equation (x^2=25) has solutions +5 and −5, but the SQRT function returns the nonnegative principal square root, so =SQRT(25) returns 5, not ±5. If the problem is solving an equation, handle the positive and negative roots outside SQRT where appropriate.
Advanced uses
Right-triangle distance. Put horizontal distance 3 in A2 and vertical distance 4 in B2. Enter =SQRT(POWER(A2,2)+POWER(B2,2)) into C2; the expected length is 5. This is the Pythagorean theorem with readable references. =SQRT(A2^2+B2^2) expresses the same mathematics.
Recover a circle radius from its area. Put 78.53981633974483 into D2, then enter =SQRT(D2/PI()). Its independently calculated radius is approximately 5. Because the entered area is rounded, the displayed radius may differ in later digits; change the number format to compare meaningfully.
Use ROOTN for other root orders. The documented PlanMaker function ROOTN(125,3) calculates the cube root, whereas SQRT(125) calculates the square root. Do not change a root’s order by changing the input number.
Errors, limits and troubleshooting
#NUM!with a negative input: SoftMaker explicitly documentsSQRT(-25)as#NUM!. Check whether the negative value is expected.SQRT(ABS(A2))changes the mathematical question by taking the magnitude first; use only if your task truly calls for that.- Formula displayed as text: Start the expression with an equals sign and make sure the cell is not being interpreted as text. SoftMaker’s formula-entry reference documents the
=prefix. - Unexpected precision: A cell formatted to two decimal places may display
1.41even when the stored result has more digits. Do not use a displayed rounding as an equality test. - A blank, text, or malformed argument: The cited SQRT page does not specify precise error outputs for every nonnumeric/coercion case. Convert the input to a verified numeric value, then retest; no native error-code assertion is made here.
PlanMaker, Excel and editions
PlanMaker 2026 English reference: SQRT(Number) and the negative-input #NUM! condition are vendor-documented. The PlanMaker 2024 English reference shows the same signature and two example outcomes. Excel: Microsoft’s own SQRT reference documents the same core syntax and negative-input error. This is documentation-level similarity, not a round-trip workbook or native cross-platform test. Windows/macOS/Linux release-family context comes from the vendor catalogue; particular plans, mobile editions, localized names, error coercion and workbook round-tripping were not tested.
Localization and worksheet verification
The formulas above use the English-language PlanMaker reference with comma-separated arguments where necessary, period-decimal numeric examples and cell references. SoftMaker documents input/configuration settings, but the cited function page does not certify every locale’s delimiter, translated function name, decimal separator or settings combination. Use the application’s Formula → Function dialog to inspect locally accepted syntax. Date of reference inspection: 2026-10-13.
To validate natively, create the specified cells, enter each formula, capture the displayed and underlying result (including number format), and record PlanMaker version/build, product/edition, OS, locale, calculation settings and file format. There was no PlanMaker native execution in this research batch. Test any error case, relevant .xlsx export/import and formatting separately; Excel’s outcome does not prove PlanMaker’s.
