Zoho Sheet COUPNCD: Find the next scheduled coupon date
Find the next regular coupon date with COUPNCD in Zoho Sheet, using explicit dates, payment frequencies and independently enumerated schedules.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: for settlement May 15, 2025 and maturity January 15, 2028, a regular semiannual schedule has its next coupon on July 15, 2025. COUPNCD returns a date value, not a payment count or an interest amount.
Syntax and defaults
=COUPNCD(settlement; maturity; frequency; [basis])
Zoho describes the result as the next coupon date after settlement. Frequency is payments per year: 1, 2 or 4. Basis defaults to 0, US/NASD 30/360; alternatives are 1 actual/actual, 2 actual/360, 3 actual/365 and 4 European 30/360. Official COUPNCD reference.
Enter actual dates, preferably using DATE. The basis describes a convention; it is not a request to shift a payment to a business day. These examples use the 15th of the month and settlement strictly between coupon dates to avoid unverified month-end and equality rules.
Complete worksheet inputs
In a fresh worksheet enter:
| Cell | Input |
|---|---|
| B2 | =DATE(2025;5;15) |
| B3 | =DATE(2028;1;15) |
| B4 | 2 |
| B5 | 0 |
Enter =COUPNCD(B2;B3;B4;B5) in B7 and format B7 as a date. The independent calendar reference is July 15, 2025. The complete formula is:
=COUPNCD(DATE(2025;5;15);DATE(2028;1;15);2;0)
If the cell displays a number, inspect its number format before concluding that the function returned a payment amount. The official examples themselves show numeric date serials. This guide uses calendar dates and does not infer an epoch from incomplete vendor example inputs.
Reconstruct the schedule independently
Starting with January 15, 2028 maturity, step backwards in six-month intervals. Nearby dates are January 15, 2025; July 15, 2025; January 15, 2026; and July 15, 2026. Settlement on May 15 lies after the January date and before the July date. Thus July 15 is the next scheduled coupon.
This enumeration is independent calendar reasoning, not an authored Zoho execution result. It also explains why simply adding six months to settlement is wrong: that would give November 15, which is not on the maturity-anchored January/July schedule.
Compare annual and quarterly schedules
For the same settlement and maturity:
| Frequency | Independent next date | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | January 15, 2026 | Annual January dates |
| 2 | July 15, 2025 | January/July pattern |
| 4 | July 15, 2025 | January/April/July/October pattern |
Semiannual and quarterly schedules happen to share the next date here. Equal outputs do not mean the schedules are equivalent: the quarterly schedule also includes October dates and has more remaining payments.
COUPNUM counts those remaining payments, while COUPPCD finds the previous coupon date. Neither is an alias for COUPNCD.
Practical use: inspect a coupon boundary
Use semiannual frequency 2 and the same January 15, 2028 maturity. With settlement July 14, 2025, the next independent schedule date is July 15, 2025. With settlement July 16, 2025, it is January 15, 2026. The small settlement change crosses a coupon boundary and advances the result by a full coupon interval.
For an audit worksheet, keep settlement, previous coupon, next coupon and remaining count in separate columns. A date result alone does not reveal how much interest has accrued, when a bank will actually transfer funds or who is entitled to a contractual payment. Do not treat this worksheet schedule as legal or trading-calendar guidance.
Errors and unsupported boundaries
The help lists #NUM! for frequency outside 1,2,4, basis outside 0–4, or settlement after maturity. Frequency 3 is therefore not a supported three-payments-per-year model. Official error conditions.
The examples do not establish settlement exactly on a coupon date, maturity equality, irregular coupons, end-of-month adjustments or text-date coercion. The word “after” in the purpose statement is not sufficient evidence for every equality boundary. Use DATE and inspect the actual instrument’s schedule when applying the function to real data.
Availability and evidence scope
The rolling official article was checked October 18, 2026. All worked dates are independent regular-schedule expectations; no authored Zoho workbook or screenshot was produced. The sources do not establish first introduction version, mobile parity or historical retirement status. Similar names in other spreadsheets do not establish identical boundary behavior.
