RIGHT function in Zoho Sheet
Quick answer: Use RIGHT to take characters from the end of a text cell. =RIGHT(A2;4) returns the four-character text 0041, retaining the leading zeros from CA-2026-0041. This is useful for display or matching suffixes; do not convert the result to a number if fixed-width formatting matters.
Formula syntax and parameter definitions
Zoho’s public reference displays:
=RIGHT(text; number)
| Parameter | Meaning and practical notes |
|---|---|
text |
Source text or text-bearing cell, such as A2. |
number |
Number of trailing characters requested. Zoho writes this argument without brackets in its syntax line; supply it explicitly for clarity. |
Use semicolons (;) as shown in these Zoho English help examples. A formula typed for a different spreadsheet application or locale may use a different separator; copy the function structure, not assumptions about separators.
Reproduce the examples: an eight-order practice sheet
Import the batch practice CSV (batches/zoho-sheet/2026-10-11T0546Z-text-batch06/order-ids-practice.csv, to be installed and linked by the owner during publication) into a new blank Zoho Sheet, starting in A1. It has headers in row 1 and records in rows 2–9. Import Order_ID as text so the four-digit ending stays padded with zeros. The other two columns are text; the spaces in customer names are intentional.
| Row | A: Order_ID | B: Customer_Raw (visible quotation marks are not part of cells) | C: Status |

The symbol ␠ in the display table represents one ordinary space. Do not type the symbol; the CSV contains actual spaces. Put formula results in a free column, such as D, rather than replacing source data. Spreadsheet row references shown below assume this import location.
Worked example with exact expected results
- In A2 confirm
CA-2026-0041appears as a text identifier. - Enter
=RIGHT(A2;4)in D2. - Expected D2 result:
0041as text. Reading from the right, the four characters are0,0,4,1. - Fill down through D4. D3 becomes
0087and D4 becomes0129.
Check directly: =RIGHT("Zoho Sheet";2) → et, following Zoho’s own example. =RIGHT("Zoho";0) → empty text according to Zoho’s remarks. Although Zoho displays the syntax as RIGHT(text; number), one of its official examples omits the number and returns the final character of Spreadsheet. That discrepancy is documented rather than silently resolving whether number is optional in every client; use ;1 for reliable explicit intent.
Advanced use in an order-processing workflow
Advanced: a suffix-based review flag
If a particular four-character suffix denotes a record to investigate, enter:
=IF(RIGHT(A2;4)="0041";"Manual check";"Routine")
Expected result in row 2: Manual check. The extracted string equals 0041. Filling the rule down to row 3 returns Routine (0087 is not 0041). This is a demonstration of matching a pre-defined identifier, not evidence that suffixes are unique. Real order IDs may reuse the same last four characters in different regions or years.
For a display identifier combining the serial and region, use =RIGHT(A2;4)&"-"&LEFT(A2;2). Independently calculated expected result: 0041-CA. Confirm this combined formula in Zoho before using it in production because it involves three separate string operations.
Common errors, limitations, and troubleshooting
#NAME!: String literals must be in double quotes; function and range names must be spelled correctly.#VALUE!: A wrong data type can fail. Avoid negative character counts and use a nonnegative integer in your own templates; the individual Zoho RIGHT page does not enumerate every numeric boundary rule.#REF!: Broken column references need to be repaired before the text can be extracted.- Unexpected zeros disappear: The output
0041is text. If you force numeric conversion, it will display as41without a custom format. Do not compare serial strings to numbers. - Short or inconsistent IDs: Four trailing characters alone may be an invalid “serial” if upstream values vary. Validate input length separately with LEN.
A dependable diagnosis is to try the direct quoted-string example first, then the A2/B2 cell reference, and finally the combined formula. This isolates input problems from reference problems and nested-formula problems. Calculated expectations are not native Zoho test reports.
Cross-software compatibility and alternatives
Microsoft’s RIGHT reference explicitly calls num_chars optional with a default of 1. Zoho’s official syntax line does not bracket number, even though Zoho also shows an omission example. Therefore this guide recommends explicitly passing ;1 in Zoho. Excel’s English reference usually uses comma arguments, whereas Zoho’s current examples use semicolons; test imported formulas and their text-formatted outputs rather than assuming identical behavior for every special character.
Zoho version and platform scope
This is a guide to the currently published online Zoho Sheet function reference, checked October 11, 2026, not a claim that every historical release, account tier, web/mobile/desktop client or offline file uses the same engine. Zoho’s public reference cited here does not state the first-supported product version. Zoho’s release notes describe Windows/macOS desktop apps (April 2026) and iPhone offline availability (August 2026), but do not establish this function’s exact cross-client parity. Confirm calculations in the actual target environment before relying on them for a workflow.
