SUMIFS Function in Zoho Sheet: Examples and Syntax

Mathematical Beginner Zoho Sheet

SUMIFS in Zoho Sheet: calculate paid invoices by region using practical sample data, clear expected results, pitfalls and the official function documentation.

Reference checked: Examples have not been run in this spreadsheet application. How we verify guides

Quick answer: Calculate paid invoices by region. An invoice tracker has a region, payment state and amount. SUMIFS sums Paid invoices for the East team without accidentally including Pending invoices.

This page covers the Zoho Sheet implementation specifically. Its example values and expected results are original educational data, not screenshots or claims of a live application test.

Syntax and argument order

=SUMIFS(sum_range; test_range; condition; [test_range1]; [condition1]; ...)

The argument order above follows the official Zoho Sheet documentation. Use the function name shown here, and replace placeholder arguments with ranges, cell references or criteria from your workbook.

Worked example with sample data

Row A: Region B: Payment C: Amount
2 East Paid 90
3 West Paid 60
4 East Pending 80
5 East Paid 110
6 West Pending 45

Enter this formula in a free result cell (outside the input range):

=SUMIFS(C2:C6;A2:A6;"East";B2:B6;"Paid")

Expected result: 200.

Why this result is correct: Only rows 2 and 5 match both criteria: 90 + 110 = 200. Zoho’s documented argument order starts with the sum range.

A second example or variation

=SUMIFS(C2:C6;B2:B6;"Paid")

Expected result: 260.

Without a region restriction, all paid invoices contribute: 90 + 60 + 110.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

Keep the criteria and amount ranges aligned. If invoices arrive from external sources, remove currency symbols stored as text before calculating.

Also check that the version of Zoho Sheet you use supports this function. A formula pasted from another application can fail because of different syntax, date interpretation, array behavior or regional separators. If the result differs, first compare the small dataset above with the expected answer before substituting your real data.

Where this function helps

An invoice tracker has a region, payment state and amount. SUMIFS sums Paid invoices for the East team without accidentally including Pending invoices. Replacing the sample cells with your own ranges lets you reuse the same reasoning. On important spreadsheets, test with a few known rows, verify the final cell formatting and keep a separate copy of the source data.

Practical checks before reusing this formula

Place the intended monetary or measurement column in the sum range, not in a criteria range. A plausible total can still be incorrect if the ranges are offset by one row.

When data is imported from another workbook, verify that the summed values are numbers rather than numeric-looking strings.
