MINUTE in Zoho Sheet: extract minute values

Quick answer: =MINUTE("12:30:00") returns 30. MINUTE reads the minute within the clock hour, an integer 0–59. It does not return total minutes elapsed in a shift; combine HOUR and MINUTE for that task.

Official syntax and arguments

=MINUTE(time)
Argument Definition
time The time or date-time value whose minute component you want. Zoho illustrates input "12:30:00" and 12-hour notation such as "3:15PM".

Result: a whole number from 0 to 59. When a date has no explicit time, Zoho treats its time component as 00:00:00. =MINUTE("11:45pm") gives 45 per its documented examples.

Platform, version, and formula punctuation

This guide documents the current official Zoho Sheet help as checked October 11, 2026; the source does not give a first-supported version or a per-device support matrix. The formulas below follow the semicolon-delimited syntax in the Zoho TIME reference. Zoho’s September 2026 What’s New says that the Windows/macOS beta desktop apps use Excel’s native formula syntax by default for offline files. Check the editor’s formula helper for the right punctuation on your device and locale, rather than assuming that the web, mobile, and desktop beta formula parsers behave identically. Zoho’s workbook locale settings also influence display and parsing of dates and times.

Set up the example workbook

Create a sheet with the following eight observations. Enter column B as genuine time values using a recognized 24-hour Time cell format (not plain text). Enter columns C:E as integers. Format column F as Text before entering the shown times, because this column is intentionally used for text-to-time conversion. A CSV import may infer F as a time; if it does, re-enter F as text or use the literal string examples instead. The attached CSV is a source-data aid, not proof that an import preserves these cell types.

Row A: Activity B: Time value C: Hour D: Minute E: Second F: Text time
2 Morning inbound 09:15:40 9 15 40 09:15:40
3 Midday pickup 12:30:05 12 30 5 12:30:05
4 Afternoon review 16:45:30 16 45 30 16:45:30
5 Evening dispatch 22:05:09 22 5 9 22:05:09
6 Overnight check 00:10:00 0 10 0 00:10:00
7 Shift handoff 14:00:00 14 0 0 14:00:00
8 Day-end closure 23:59:59 23 59 59 23:59:59
9 Early dispatch 06:20:15 6 20 15 06:20:15

Keep B as a time and F as text. To eliminate ambiguous text interpretation when troubleshooting, construct known times with TIME(hours;minutes;seconds); note that actual cells may display 12-hour AM/PM or 24-hour times depending on cell format and locale.

Worked examples

  1. In G2, enter =MINUTE(B2), where B2 holds 09:15:40. Result: 15.
  2. Fill G2:G9. Expected minute values: 15, 30, 45, 5, 10, 0, 59, 20.
  3. Check a literal: =MINUTE("3:15PM") should give 15 in Zoho’s documented syntax.
  4. Change only the time display format if the extracted number is correct but B appears as 9:15 AM instead of 09:15:40.
Formula Expected result Reason
=MINUTE(B3) 30 12:30:05
=MINUTE(B5) 5 22:05:09
=MINUTE(B7) 0 14:00:00 exactly
=MINUTE(B8) 59 23:59:59

Advanced scenario: time-of-day scheduling buckets

Convert a clock time into minutes since midnight, which is easier to compare with cutoffs:

=HOUR(B2)*60+MINUTE(B2)

For B2=09:15:40, the result is 555 (9 × 60 + 15); for B5=22:05:09 the result is 1325. Seconds are ignored by design. This can categorize records by the minute of day, including logs that show different date formats.

Label the first or second half of an hour:

=IF(MINUTE(B2)<30;"First half";"Second half")

B2 (09:15:40) is First half; B3 (12:30:05) is Second half. If you need true 30-minute interval start times, use TIME with the appropriate minutes and zero seconds, not MINUTE alone.

Frequent mistakes and troubleshooting

  • 30 means minute 30, not a half-hour duration: MINUTE is one component, not accumulated elapsed time.
  • A value of 0 at an exact hour is correct. It does not indicate a blank or failed calculation.
  • Time import or locale parsing: Treat B as a time. If #VALUE! appears, reconstruct a controlled time using =TIME(12;30;5), then run MINUTE against that result.
  • #NAME! or #REF!: Check function spelling, delimiters in nested formulas, and deleted cells.
  • Dates without times: Official Zoho documentation specifies a midnight default for date-only data.
  • Rounding mistakes: MINUTE(09:15:59) is still 15; it never automatically rounds up to 16.

Excel, Google Sheets and other spreadsheet tools

Excel and Google Sheets have MINUTE for the component of a time, but the exact import behavior of free-form strings, timezone assumptions and number formats can differ. Zoho’s published TIME(hours; minutes; seconds) uses semicolons and permits blank time parameters; Excel documents TIME(hour, minute, second) as three required arguments. Test the calculation using the app’s formula helper after migrating instead of mechanically copying argument punctuation.
