TIMEVALUE in Zoho Sheet: Time Formulas and Worked Examples
Convert recognized time text into a numeric fraction of a day, with locale caveats.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in Zoho Sheet. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: =TIMEVALUE("12PM") returns 0.5, meaning noon is halfway through a 24-hour day. TIMEVALUE is useful when imported times are text rather than actual time values. Format the returned fraction as Time if you want to display it as a clock reading.
Official syntax and argument
=TIMEVALUE(time_text)
| Argument | Meaning |
|---|---|
time_text |
A string representing a recognizable clock time. Examples in Zoho documentation include 12PM and date+time text; Zoho says the date portion of an accepted input is ignored. |
Return: a numerical fraction of one day. Zoho documents the range 0 to about 0.99988426, corresponding to 00:00:00 through 23:59:59 at one-second precision. For a 24-hour time H:M:S, the independently computed fraction is (H × 3600 + M × 60 + S) / 86400. This arithmetic is illustrative; acceptance of a particular text format is subject to locale and app parsing.
Official-reference warning: Zoho’s TIMEVALUE page lists TIMEVALUE("14:30PM") as giving 0.104166667. That text combines 24-hour notation with an AM/PM suffix and the cited result is not the usual 14:30 fraction (0.604166667). The reference is internally questionable; do not use that literal as a reliable migration test. Use unambiguous 24-hour strings and verify them natively.
Platform, version, and formula punctuation
This guide documents the current official Zoho Sheet help as checked October 11, 2026; the source does not give a first-supported version or a per-device support matrix. The formulas below follow the semicolon-delimited syntax in the Zoho TIME reference. Zoho’s September 2026 What’s New says that the Windows/macOS beta desktop apps use Excel’s native formula syntax by default for offline files. Check the editor’s formula helper for the right punctuation on your device and locale, rather than assuming that the web, mobile, and desktop beta formula parsers behave identically. Zoho’s workbook locale settings also influence display and parsing of dates and times.
Set up the example workbook
Create a sheet with the following eight observations. Enter column B as genuine time values using a recognized 24-hour Time cell format (not plain text). Enter columns C:E as integers. Format column F as Text before entering the shown times, because this column is intentionally used for text-to-time conversion. A CSV import may infer F as a time; if it does, re-enter F as text or use the literal string examples instead. The attached CSV is a source-data aid, not proof that an import preserves these cell types.
| Row | A: Activity | B: Time value | C: Hour | D: Minute | E: Second | F: Text time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Morning inbound | 09:15:40 | 9 | 15 | 40 | 09:15:40 |
| 3 | Midday pickup | 12:30:05 | 12 | 30 | 5 | 12:30:05 |
| 4 | Afternoon review | 16:45:30 | 16 | 45 | 30 | 16:45:30 |
| 5 | Evening dispatch | 22:05:09 | 22 | 5 | 9 | 22:05:09 |
| 6 | Overnight check | 00:10:00 | 0 | 10 | 0 | 00:10:00 |
| 7 | Shift handoff | 14:00:00 | 14 | 0 | 0 | 14:00:00 |
| 8 | Day-end closure | 23:59:59 | 23 | 59 | 59 | 23:59:59 |
| 9 | Early dispatch | 06:20:15 | 6 | 20 | 15 | 06:20:15 |
Keep B as a time and F as text. To eliminate ambiguous text interpretation when troubleshooting, construct known times with TIME(hours;minutes;seconds); note that actual cells may display 12-hour AM/PM or 24-hour times depending on cell format and locale.
Worked conversion example
- Select F2:F9 as Text before entering the displayed clock strings; a leading apostrophe can help enforce text input if supported by your editor.
- Type
=TIMEVALUE(F2)in G2. If F2 contains the text09:15:40, the expected fraction is 0.385879630. - Fill through G9 after confirming Zoho actually recognized F2’s format. Expected fractions are listed below; formatting the result as Time will display the original clock times instead.
- To avoid text-import ambiguity when learning the function, test a directly quoted literal such as
=TIMEVALUE("12PM"); the expected result is 0.5, explicitly documented by Zoho.
| Text input | Formula | Expected fraction (rounded to 9 decimals) |
|---|---|---|
09:15:40 |
=TIMEVALUE("09:15:40") |
0.385879630 |
12:30:05 |
=TIMEVALUE("12:30:05") |
0.520891204 |
16:45:30 |
=TIMEVALUE("16:45:30") |
0.698263889 |
22:05:09 |
=TIMEVALUE("22:05:09") |
0.920243056 |
00:10:00 |
=TIMEVALUE("00:10:00") |
0.006944444 |
23:59:59 |
=TIMEVALUE("23:59:59") |
0.999988426 |
The expected values are fractions calculated independently. The official help’s upper bound 0.99988426 appears inconsistent with 23:59:59: independently, 86,399/86,400 is 0.999988426. Treat the published bound as another review flag until native Zoho execution confirms what the app returns.
Advanced use: classify imported order times
If column F contains text times, compare a parsed value against a real 17:00 time without relying on alphabetical string sorting:
=IF(TIMEVALUE(F2)>=TIME(17;0;0);"Evening";"Before 17:00")
For F2=09:15:40 expect Before 17:00; for F5=22:05:09 expect Evening. Midnight F6=00:10:00 counts as before 17:00, not a continuation of yesterday’s evening shift. An after-hours rule crossing midnight needs an OR condition as in the HOUR guide.
Convert a text timestamp into total seconds since midnight: =TIMEVALUE(F2)*86400 has a mathematically expected value of 33340 for 09:15:40. Floating-point display could show a tiny discrepancy; round or format if exact integer reporting is required.
Error handling, parsing, and precision
- Numbers stored as text vs true time numbers: TIMEVALUE is meant for text; if F has already been converted to a time value on import, use F directly rather than assuming TIMEVALUE needs to process it.
#VALUE!: The string may not match the active language/locale. Test Zoho’s documented"12PM"first, then a simple"09:15:40"; check whitespace, punctuation, and cell type.- Misleading decimal: 0.5 is noon, not half a minute or 12:00 AM. Apply Time formatting when displaying it.
- Date text ignored: Zoho says an accompanying date is ignored if the complete datetime string is recognized. Date parsing remains locale-sensitive; do not infer timezone conversions.
- Other errors:
#NAME!can reflect a typo or unquoted string;#REF!points to invalid references.
Alternatives and cross-software differences
Excel TIMEVALUE also returns the time fraction of a day and discards recognized date information. But acceptance of text formats is locale-dependent; do not assume a text accepted in Excel or Google Sheets is recognized by Zoho. Microsoft’s reference uses the same stated upper bound, which is inconsistent with the mathematical one-second fraction; the reference is not proof of Zoho’s numeric rounding. Zoho’s 2026 desktop beta offline formula-syntax change adds an additional reason to verify the formula on the actual target device.
