Zoho Sheet REPT Function: Syntax, Examples and Troubleshooting

Text Beginner Zoho Sheet

Repeat a text fragment a specific number of times with documented zero handling and practical visual-status examples.

Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in Zoho Sheet. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =REPT("*";F2) repeats an asterisk for the score recorded in F2. With a score of 4, the expected result is ****. REPT creates text, not a numeric summary or real chart.

When to use REPT

REPT is useful for simple, accessible text markers in a small tracker: a fixed number of dashes, a visible rating bar, repeated separators, or a checklist marker. It is not a replacement for accessible chart controls: a screen reader may read the repeated characters literally, and proportional fonts can distort visual comparisons.

Exact Zoho syntax and arguments

=REPT(text; number)
Argument Required? Meaning
text Yes Literal text in double quotes (such as "#") or a cell/reference providing text to repeat.
number Yes Number of repetitions; a number, referenced numeric cell or expression such as F2.

Officially documented edge case: Zoho states that number = 0 returns an empty text string. Its examples include =REPT("Zoho";3) → ZohoZohoZoho, and =REPT("#";5) → #####. The help page does not specify fractional rounding, behaviour for negative counts, or a maximum output length in Zoho; those cases require a native check. Do not copy Excel’s truncation and maximum-length rules as though they were verified Zoho rules.

Version, platform and locale scope

The syntax below is taken from Zoho Sheet’s current public English online function reference checked October 11, 2026. That reference does not identify the first Zoho release supporting this function or prove identical behaviour across historical releases, desktop wrappers, iOS, Android, or account configurations. No such first-supported version is claimed here. The published Zoho examples use semicolons (;) between arguments; syntax displayed by a localized application should be checked in its formula helper rather than copying separators from Excel. Zoho documents spreadsheet locale controls for number, date, currency, and decimal formats. Do not assume text that looks like a number will parse identically under all locales. Zoho locale settings.

Reproducible practice worksheet

Use a new Zoho Sheet spreadsheet. Create these six column headings in row 1, then enter the eight example rows. Select column E as text before entering values, because these are intentionally imported-looking numeric strings; a CSV import may otherwise turn them into numbers. Keep order identifiers in A as text. If importing the included CSV, inspect column types afterward and correct them before comparing formulas. The examples use fictitious records only.

Row A — Order_ID B — First_Name C — Last_Name D — Quantity E — Price_Text F — Score
2 ORD-001 Ada Ng 3 12 (text) 4
3 ORD-002 Ben Li 2 7 (text) 2
4 ORD-003 Cara Moss 5 0 (text) 5
5 ORD-004 Dan Ives 1 19 (text) 3
6 ORD-005 Eva Chen 4 6 (text) 1
7 ORD-006 Finn Yu 2 14 (text) 4
8 ORD-007 Gia Ray 6 3 (text) 2

A formula such as =B2 references the first data row, not the header. Enter examples in blank cells, or create a separate Results sheet and select the sample cells to form explicit references. When copying a formula down, check the references advance to the correct rows. Set result cells to General where you want to see the returned value without extra display formatting.

Worked examples with step-by-step results

  1. Enter =REPT("*";F2) in G2. The F2 score is 4; expected display text is ****.
  2. Enter =REPT("*";F3) in G3. F3 is 2; expected two asterisks, displayed as **.
  3. Enter =REPT("ab";2) in another blank cell. Expected abab because the entire fragment is repeated twice.
  4. Enter =REPT("#";0). Expected empty text; a visually blank cell does not prove it contains a genuinely empty source value.
  5. Enter =REPT("-";5). Expected -----.
  6. Enter =REPT("OK";3). Expected OKOKOK.

Advanced application: rating card with identifiers

To annotate a scored order without overwriting the original numeric score, use:

=CONCATENATE(A2;" score ";REPT("#";F2))

For A2 = ORD-001 and F2 = 4, the expected label is ORD-001 score ####. Copy the formula downward to align each indicator with its corresponding order row. For F6 = 1, row 6 would show ORD-005 score #. Decide in advance whether a zero rating should show nothing or use a separate text label such as No rating; the REPT result itself is empty when the repetition count is zero.

A second use case is a fixed-width outline separator: =REPT("-";10) gives ten hyphens. Keep the repeat count restrained so long strings do not impair readability.

Errors, limitations and practical fixes

Symptom Check Next step
No visible marker Repeat count might be 0; Zoho documents empty-text output Inspect the numeric source cell or show a separate explicit label for zero.
#NAME! Typo in function name or missing quotation marks Confirm REPT and quoted literal text.
#VALUE! or unexpected output Count input might be invalid text Use a verified numeric cell and test unsupported fractional or negative inputs directly in Zoho.
#REF! Deleted source column or invalid reference Update the reference to the intended count cell.
Bar too long or visually misaligned Excessive count or proportional font Restrict score scale, use consistent typography, consider a real bar chart.
Markers do not reflect current source values Formula was converted to static text Keep formulas in derived cells and maintain numeric source values.

Important distinctions: A returned empty text string is not necessarily equivalent to an actually blank cell in downstream functions. Zoho’s REPT help does not document an exact maximum character count, so a test involving thousands of characters is intentionally omitted. If F2 contains 4.5 or -1, the result is not predicted here until native Zoho testing establishes how non-integer and negative values are handled.

Compatibility: Zoho versus Excel

Microsoft’s Excel reference also documents REPT, but explicitly describes truncation of a noninteger repeat count and a 32,767-character limit. Zoho’s cited article does not specify those details. Both illustrate repeating text; don’t assume the Excel implementation’s edge conditions apply in Zoho. Formula separators differ in the cited English examples (Zoho ;, Excel ,). Google Sheets also offers REPT, but test platform-specific limits before porting an edge-case workbook.

Quick questions

Can REPT draw a rating bar? It can create a text indicator; the score remains in its numeric source cell.

Why is my result blank? The documented zero-count case returns empty text.

What about 4.5 repetitions? Zoho’s public reference used here does not resolve rounding; native verification is required.

  • CONCATENATE — join several text values.
  • REPT — repeat text without building a string manually.
  • CHAR — get a character from its numeric code.
  • CODE — inspect the first character’s code.
  • VALUE — convert text representing a number into a numeric result.
  • LEFT, LEN, TEXTJOIN, and TRIM — related text tools under review.
