Criteria Β· eight-software comparison

SUMIFS with two conditions

Add values only when two columns match: compare SUMIFS, criteria modes, documented syntax and older-engine alternatives.

Task

Add Amount in C2:C6 where Region in A2:A6 is North and Status in B2:B6 is Open.

Expected output

200

Compatibility trap: SUMIFS starts with the sum range, while SUMIF has a different argument order. Regex versus wildcard matching also varies.

One shared five-row test dataset

The same source rows make results easier to compare. Use the CSV in any supported spreadsheet application; the ODS workbook also includes LibreOffice formula tests.

Shared formula comparison fixture (columns A through F)
Region (A)Status (B)Amount (C)SKU (D)Label (E)Units (F)

SouthClosed80SKU-102Beta1
NorthOpen75SKU-103Gamma3

Formula syntax and feature differences

β€œDocumented” rows cite official product help, but were not run in the destination software. A formula shown here is a migration candidate, not a guarantee of identical behaviour or file interoperability.

LibreOffice Calc

Documented

Version: LibreOffice 4.0 and later.

Arguments: SUMIFS(sum_range; criteria_range1; criteria1; ...)

=SUMIFS(C2:C6;A2:A6;"North";B2:B6;"Open")

Two criteria are joined with logical AND; criteria settings may interpret regex or wildcards.

Official documentation β†—

Apache OpenOffice Calc

Alternative

Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1 series; workaround not executed.

Arguments: SUMPRODUCT(array1; array2; ...)

=SUMPRODUCT((A2:A6="North")*(B2:B6="Open")*C2:C6)

SUMPRODUCT is an explicit array-arithmetic approach to two conditions. Native SUMIFS parity has not been established here.

Official documentation β†—

Gnumeric

Documented

Version: Function in Gnumeric manual; installed version not executed.

Arguments: SUMIFS(actual_range,range1,criteria1,...)

=SUMIFS(C2:C6,A2:A6,"North",B2:B6,"Open")

Documented SUMIFS with sum range followed by criteria ranges; comma separators reflect English examples.

Official documentation β†—

Calligra Sheets

Alternative

Version: Version-dependent; candidate only.

Arguments: SUMPRODUCT with boolean array arithmetic

=SUMPRODUCT((A2:A6="North")*(B2:B6="Open")*C2:C6)

Candidate SUMPRODUCT workaround; no claim that a native SUMIFS is missing. Validate on your installed KDE version.

Official documentation β†—

PlanMaker

Documented

Version: PlanMaker 2026 help.

Arguments: SUMIFS(SumRange, Range1, Criterion1, ...)

=SUMIFS(C2:C6,A2:A6,"North",B2:B6,"Open")

PlanMaker specifically warns that old .xls may replace SUMIFS calculations with fixed values.

Official documentation β†—

ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor

Documented

Version: Current ONLYOFFICE function help.

Arguments: SUMIFS(sum_range, criteria_range1, criteria1, ...)

=SUMIFS(C2:C6,A2:A6,"North",B2:B6,"Open")

The help documents optional further criteria pairs and wildcard support; not executed here.

Official documentation β†—

Apple Numbers

Documented

Version: Current Apple Functions guide.

Arguments: SUMIFS(sum-values, test-values, condition, ...)

=SUMIFS(C2:C6,A2:A6,"North",B2:B6,"Open")

In Numbers, confirm each reference is to the intended table and adjust table names before copying.

Official documentation β†—

Zoho Sheet

Documented

Version: Current Zoho Sheet help.

Arguments: SUMIFS(sum_range; test_range; condition; ...)

=SUMIFS(C2:C6;A2:A6;"North";B2:B6;"Open")

Zoho documents special pattern syntax for text criteria; simple exact labels avoid this pitfall.

What changes when you migrate?

The fixture has North/Open values 125 and 75, so the expected sum is 200. This number was computed independently from CSV rows; it is not a cross-application execution result.

Text criteria are deliberately simple. A query for a literal asterisk or a regex pattern cannot be translated safely by swapping argument separators.

All criteria ranges must align row-for-row with the sum range. Check both endpoints before diagnosing a function mismatch.

Why the argument order matters

The shared CSV places Region in column A, Status in B and Amount in C. The desired rows are:

Region Status Amount
North Open 125
North Open 75
Total 200

The other North row is Closed and therefore excluded. This is a two-condition logical AND, not an OR across the two columns. The total, 200, is independently calculated from the fixture, not the result of executing each formula in all eight applications.

SUMIF is not just a shorter SUMIFS

For SUMIFS, the first argument is the values to sum; criteria ranges and criteria follow. In a single-criterion SUMIF, many spreadsheet applications instead place the criterion before the optional sum range. Mixing the two orders can return the wrong total or a parameter error. LibreOffice, PlanMaker, ONLYOFFICE, Apple Numbers and Zoho publish SUMIFS references, while Gnumeric also documents SUMIFS. The versions and argument separators are recorded in the comparison above.

Why a SUMPRODUCT workaround needs testing

The boolean-expression alternative multiplies each row’s value by 1 only if both comparisons match. In some engines, array evaluation and how text values are coerced affect the outcome. The suggested alternative is not an assertion that SUMIFS is missing from that program, and it has not been run in each destination engine.

Common mistakes: using an amount range one row shorter than its criteria ranges, mistyping a label, accidentally matching a regex pattern rather than literal text, and treating blank and zero as interchangeable.

Verification checklist

  1. Confirm the header layout in the actual import and use the same row limits for all three ranges.
  2. Check the North/Open rows individually; the expected 125 + 75 is 200.
  3. Change one Open row to Closed to ensure the total responds correctly.
  4. Test a zero-match pair. A sum of zero might be valid even when no records were selected; report the count separately if that matters.
  5. When exporting between ODS and XLSX, reopen the workbook and recalculate before trusting displayed cached totals.

Continue with the COUNTIFS comparison if you need the number of matching records rather than their total.

Documentation and testing disclosure

Official vendor sources and version scopes appear beside each software candidate above. Expected outputs are independently reasoned from the shared sample; the five new comparisons do not claim native execution in any of the eight applications. Read more about how we distinguish documentation from execution in our editorial standards.

Evidence standard: Only LibreOffice rows labelled β€œNative tested” were run as executable fixtures. Other entries reflect vendor help or a separately labelled workaround. Dates and versions are shown when known. Last editorial research: 2026-10-11.
