OpenOffice Calc Troubleshooting and Error Reference

Preserve the evidence before changing the workbook

Make a separately named copy and note the failing cell, formula, inputs, visible message and file format. Compare against a known-good copy if you have one. Never overwrite the only original while trying different imports or repairs.

This reference uses the official Apache OpenOffice 4.1 Calc Guide, Appendix C, published August 25, 2025, checked on 2026-10-21. It covers desktop diagnostic concepts, not a newly executed test of every 4.1 patch release. Linked tutorials disclose their own native-test and platform scope. Do not assume LibreOffice’s newer error codes, limits or troubleshooting controls apply to Apache OpenOffice.

Select the cell and identify the failure class

The official error-code appendix explains the cell and status-bar messages. Use this short routing table, then inspect the actual formula:

Symptom First investigation
### Widen the column; a formatted value may not fit.
502 Check function argument restrictions, including uniqueness requirements for a database lookup.
508 or 509 Look for unmatched parentheses or a missing operator.
519 / #VALUE Check input types and the function’s requirements.
524 / #REF! Inspect missing or invalid referenced cells, sheets or names.
525 / #NAME? Check unresolved identifiers and required dependencies.
532 / #DIV/0! Inspect the denominator or a function’s minimum input requirements.
522 or 523 Investigate a circular reference or a calculation that cannot converge.

These are clues, not instructions to suppress the error. A zero in place of an unknown result can quietly corrupt a total. Do not enable iteration simply to make 522 disappear: first decide whether the model is actually intended to refer back to itself.

The cell shows the formula itself

Use formula text instead of results to distinguish a sheet-wide display option from a literal text entry. Inspect more than one known formula before changing a global view setting. If only one imported cell is affected, test that cell’s entry rather than rewriting the entire worksheet.

The result is stale, or correct arithmetic gives the wrong answer

Use recalculation and circular-formula diagnosis for calculation freshness. If the number updates but remains wrong, use Detective to follow the inputs. A wrong quantity multiplied by a correct price produces no formula error; an error-code table cannot identify that business mistake.

For a formula using a named label, inspect named and database ranges. For an error that begins after moving a file, inspect external-workbook paths. Do not approve unknown external content just to see whether an error goes away.

The problem starts during import, editing or saving

  • Decimals or columns are misread: return to CSV delimiter and decimal-comma import. Compare a few source records before importing the full file again. Keep account codes and other identifiers out of numeric cleanup operations.
  • Input is refused: distinguish validity rules from sheet/cell protection. Do not remove an intentional rule without the workbook owner’s agreement.
  • Two edits conflict: follow shared-file conflict handling and preserve both versions. A lock warning is not a reason to delete a lock file while another editor might be active.
  • An earlier saved state is needed: review saved document versions. Do not assume a saved version exists or that it replaces a separate backup.
  • Only print output is wrong: use printing and PDF checks, not formula changes.

A repair needs a change test

Record the expected result independently before making the correction. Afterward, change one relevant input, confirm that the formula responds correctly, then restore the intended value. Save the repaired copy, close and reopen it, and check again. Matching one displayed number is insufficient if the formula no longer responds to its dependencies.

If the issue remains, reduce a copy to the smallest non-confidential case. Record the exact OpenOffice build, operating system, locale, format, formula and steps, including whether the problem also occurs in a new workbook. Do not label a failure as an application bug solely because another spreadsheet displays a different answer. No new native screenshots or application execution are claimed by this reference.
